The HCBE's personnel manager, Jeanne McDonald, has been working on the policy since June 1 , and says it is important "to make sure people know they have an avenue to go through when something in this area happens." The policy outlines the procedure to be followed when complaints of sexual harassment are raised by those in the school system — including men, women and students. Ms. McDonald feels the policy will help ensure that people can work in the school system without thel disruptive element of sexual harassment. This assurance is reflected in the policy's opening statement: "It is the intent of the Huron County Board of Education to provide and maintain an environment which is supportive of both productivity and the personal goals, dignity and self-esteem of every individual in the system, an environment in which all employees, volunteers and students can work free from sexual harassment of a verbal, visual or physical nature," The policy _also defines sexual harassment, states what is considered not to be .sexual harassment, and gives a step-by- step complaint procedure. In drafting the HCBE policy, Ms. McDonald looked at policies of other school boards and at the Human Rights Code, Input was also received from the teachers' associations. Gino Giannandrea, HCBE superintendent of personnel, says he has not had a case of sexual harassment reported to him in the three years he has been in his position. "It was just something we felt we had to have," Board Chairman John Jewitt says. Mr. Jewitt also said there have been no cases of sexual harassment brought before the board during the time he has served as a member. "Honestly, I am not aware of any," he said. "If there have been any complaints, they have been dealt with without coming before the board." • Informative advertising helps lower • the price of goods.
