WO hind o Registered Retirement Savings Plan should you buy this year? The answer very much depends ofl what kind of RRSP you may already have, and the degree of investment risk you can live with comfortably. The fact is there is no single in- vestment that is best for all times and economic conditions. That's why it's advisable invest in several different R s. Remem- ber, you may own asy plans as t; you wish. Here are some of the elements of investment balance and diversifica- tion you should consider for your RRSP: 1. Guaranteed assets — Every in- vestor needs some guaranteed money; funds you can depend on receiving at some future date for a specific purpose such as retirement income. It is money invested for a set period of time with a fixed rate of return. An ideal way to invest in this form of RRSP is to purchase a "regis- tered" Guaranteed Investment Certificate, Make sure that the financial institution which sells you a GIC has registered it as an RRSP- qualified investment. Incidentally, by investing in several different GICs, you can achieve balance through varying the maturity dates of the certificates — to allow for changes in interest rates over the years. 2. Equity -based assets — Your RRSP investment strategy also should provide an opportunity to share in the growth of corporate pro- fits. Stocks will reflect the in- creasing assets and profits of suc- cessful companies of all sizes in all ,major,Cariadian nichistries. A con- venient way to hold stiicks in your RRSP is through an RRSP-eligible mutual fund or funds. In that way, you will be spreading your investment dollars through several different types of companies and industries, thereby achieving greater safety through diversifica- tion. The safety factor is of major importance, particularly when you get close to retirement from the ac- tive work force. 3. Interest -based assets — Your RRSP portfolio of holdings might also contain some interest-sensitive investments. These are investments that will fluctuate with changing interest rates over time. Some examples are mortgage or bond - based mutual funds. By • vesting in different types of interest ensitive financial products — ones khich are affected by in- terest rates moving in opposite By Harry L. Mardon clitectionS — you can 4- aehiOlre balance, no matter what the current interest rate trends are. Over the long term, this approach can be beneficial to you. 4. Real property assets --- Some types of investments prosper primarily through inflation -driven price increases. A good example -of this form of investment is real estate. One convenient way to own real estate through your RRSP is to buy shares of a mutual fund that invests in real property (land on which there are revenue-producing buildings), but make sure the fund has a widely dispersed and diversified portfolio of property holdings. The investments should be geographically dispersed, and not all of the same type. This way, you not only benefit from diversification, but you are free from the worries of hadson agement of the properties. . selves. owing there Ls a broae, range of RRSP vices available, you have thecha4lenge of deciding what's best for, yoIr own personal RRSP in- vestment. The most significant part of planning your RRSP is to determine what your own personal "comfort zone" is. You have to be comfortable with your investments, not worrying about them. However, it is equally important that you ensure your RRSP investments are in trustworthy hands and growing at a satisfactory rate. Of the five cases investigated, three involved sexual abuse and two in' volved physical abuse. Four of the five cases were verified by investi- gators. Bythe end of 1988, the agency was serving 46 families in which child abuse had occurred. John Penn, local director of Family and Children's Services, says the agency's goal in revealing these statistics is to remind the public that child abuse is a problem which occurs not only in large metropolitan areas and faraway places, but one which also occurs close to home. Social work staff at Family and Children's Services work with 'families where abuse has occurred to help reduce the risk to children and to assist parents to find better child-rearing practices. At times, it is necessary. to place children in foster care in order to protect them from future harm. At the end of 1988, the agency had placed 53 children in its 48 local foster homes. , Foster care is often required only for a temporary period until families are more able to meet the needs of their children. Six children were returned to their families during the month of December. The agency deals not only with problems related to child abuse, but •••••••••••••••■••••••••• L_ITCRUIVIVREATIV, 11 111Phone 357-1630 for 24hourmovieinformaijon PLAYING FRIDAY FEBRUARY A 3RD AT 7:00 P.M., SATURDAY IFEBRUARY 4TH AT 1:30 AND 7:00 P.M. At the end of 1988, it was serving 230 local families. Assisting the agency's social work staff in providing services to families are 52 volunteers. One project which relies heavily on volunteer help is the agency's an- nual Christmas Bureau. This year it provided assistance to 320 families, including 700 children.
