Optimist Atoms 'splitt
in regularseason action
The Wingham Optimist Atoms
split a pair of regular season games
leading up to the weekend and their
tough overtime elimination from the
Seaforth tournament.
Clinton 5, Wingliam 2
The Clinton club opened the scor-
ing against the Optimist Atoms near
the end of the first period on a
screened shot deflected past the
Wingham goaltender's blocker.
In the second, Wingham came
back to tie it on a goal by Josh
Johnston with assists going to Neil
Mowbray and Jeremy Creeden. Five
minutes later, Clinton went ahead
again on a marker at 5:29, but in the
dying seconds of the middle frame,
Wingham came back to tie the score
on a goal by Creeden from Johnston
and Travis Baler.
It was in the third period, how-
ever, at t e Atoms came apart as
the home team scored three un-
answered goals to roll over the
Wingham team 5-2.
The Wingham skaters can play
hockey with Clinton, but as with '
many of their opponents this year,
they have to use teamwork for a full
60 minutes to make it happen.
Wingham 3, Mitchell 1
. ' In their last meeting in Mitchell,
the locals eeked out an exciting
hold -the -fort type of win that took a
lot of teamwork.
This time in Wingham, the
Optimist Atoms rolled to an early
lead and had to rely on some luck'
around the goal crease to hang on
again.
Travis Baier scored the first goal
for Wingham at 6:34 of the first
period, an unassisted goal that beat

Wingham's lead went to 3-0 in the
second period with Creeden's second
goal of the game, picking his way
through the defence and putting his
shot into the top corner at the 12:05
mark. Neil Mowbray got the assist
on that one.
From that poifit on, however, the
locals seemed to relax.. Mitchell
tried to mount a comeback, but it
didn't click until about 4hree
Minutes into the third period When
Martin Vandehoven netted one from
a sharp angle.
That goal lit a fire under the
Mitchell players, but didn't seem to
help Wingham at all. The Mitchell
skaters buzzed around the Wingham
end for much of the rest of the third
period — hit the goalpost on at least
one try — but even pulling the net -
minder in the final minute didn't get
them another goal.
