Overtime loss eliminates
local Atoms from tourney
The Wingham Optimist Atoms
were eliminated from the Seaforth
tournament this past weekend in a
tough overtime loss to Goderich.
The Atoms won their opening
game of the tournament, 10-0 over
Strathroy, in a contest played at 8
a.m. on Saturday.
Wingham was short a couple of
players, but up against a team they
had little trouble handling, as the
score would indicate.
Josh —Johnston and Jeremy
Creeden led the Wingham attack.
Johnston had two goals and three
assists for five points while
'Creeden's three goals and one assist
gave him four points in the game.
Neil Mowbray, Travis Baier and
Mark Gibson each had three-point
games while singles went to Todd
Edgar, Gary Skinn, Patrick Magee
and Joel Pegg.
After starting at 8 a.m., the Atoms
didn't get back into action until nine
o'clock that night.
They started the game with a full
lineup, but between the flu and the
cold, five of those starters would
normally have been considered
"doubtful" if it hadn't been a
tournament game.
Even so, Wingham opened the
scoring about halfway through the
first period — Johnston scoring on a
goal assisted by Baier.
Halfway through the second,
Goderich came back to tie with a
marker netted by captain Craig
Corriveau. Three minutes later,
Goderich took a 2-1 lead on a goal by
John MacDonald.
Wingham's Baier tied the score
with a power -play goal near the end
of the second period, with Johnston
and Creeden drawing the assists.
Baier hit again about a minute into
the third period, assisted by Gibson
and Johnston, but the 3-2 Wingham
lead was short-lived as Mark.
Johnston again tied it for Goderich
'at the six -minute mark and setting
the stage for overtime.
Wingham drew the only penalty in
the extra frame — tripping at 1:52 —
but managed to hold off the Gode-
rich power play. Less than 30
seconds after the penalty ended,
however, Goderich netted the
winner.
Mark Johnston got credit for the
winning goal, coming with only 43
seconds remaining in the overtime
period.
That eliminated Wingham from
the tournament and sent Goderich
into the final on Sunday.
