UCW afternoon unit
looks at 'What's New'
FORDWICH--"What's New" was
the theme of the afternoon unit of the
United Church Women when
members met recently at the
church. After a pot -luck Lunch, Mrs.
Elmer Harding welcomed everyone
and opened the meeting with a
reading, "Let Us Look Back on the
Road We Have Come". Roll call on
the new year 'was answered by 16
members and secretary Mrs. Leo
Ruttan read the minutes and
correspondence. Mrs. George
Richards gave the treasurer's
report.
After presiding over the 1988
business, Mrs. Harding thanked
everyone for their co-operation with
her as past leader and welcomed the
new leader, Mrs. Scott Clarkson,
who continued with new business.
The worship service, with the
theme, "What's New", was given by
Mrs. Clarence Carswell and Mrs.
Anson Ruttan. Mrs. Ruttan read
"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow",
followed by a hymn and Mrs. Car-
swell led in prayer. Scripture from
Isaiah was read by Mrs. Ruttan.
Mrs. Carswell, in her meditation,
stressed the importance of following
God's will in our lives. Mrs.
Richards and Minnie McElwain
sang "Ivory Palaces", accompanied
by Mrs. Russell Nickel.
The program, a study on Christian
joy, was given by Mrs. Carswell and
Mrs. Ruttan, with readings about
joy . from the Bible. The service
ended with prayer.

day Jan. 6 at Niagara Falls, USA. Born in East Wawanosh Township
in 1899, the was the daughter of Joseph Chamney and Sarah Pur-
due. A suprise birthday party was hosted by her daughter and son-
in-law, Joanne and Neil Johnson and grandchildren Thomas and
Sarah of Albion, New York. Friends from the Albion area, as well as

FORDWICH—Fourteen tables
were in play on Friday night, Jan.
13, at the Fordwich Hall, sponsored
by the Fordwich Senior Citizens.
Winners fel' high scores were
Charlotte'flavidson and Percy
l3ramhill; consolation, Ruth Har-
ding and Minnie McElvvItin; special
prizes, Bill Leeming and Hazel
Seiler.
The next card party will be Jan.

bership dues. Mrs. Tim Bunker

The birthday box was passed.
Members are to save used stamps
and give them to Mrs. Emerson
Ferguson; sales tapes from Smith's
and Zehrs are to be given to .either
Mrs. Sothern or Mrs. Nixon. They
were also asked to remember their
secret pals.
The group will cater for a wedding
in early September. The March
meeting will be at the Fordwich
Village Nursing Home, preceded by
a program with the residents. This
will be March 16 in the afternoon;
members are asked to note the
change of date.

Mrs. Doti Hawkins who recently lost
their home by fire. Rev. Brenda
Clark announced there would be a
meeting sponsored by the Bible
Society in the Gorrie United Chureh
tonight (Tuesday) at 8:15. A film
will be shown by Rev. Wallace
Howlett.
Mrs. Browne gave a humorous
reading. Mrs. Clark closed the
meeting and all repeated the Grace.
Mrs. Tim Bunker conducted two
contests. Lunch was served by Mrs.
Don King and Mrs. Daunt, assisted
by the hostess.

NEW PREMIER
Hon. G. H. Ferguson was the new
premier of Ontario following the
provincial election in June of 1923. It
was a landslide for the Conserva-
tives. Premier Drury and five of his'
cabinet suffered defeat. North
Huron's choice was John Joynt as
Hurons all went Tory.
