We enjoyed playing basketball, North Pole Trivia and making snowflakes as our week's activities. We wish a speedy recovery to 'Catherine Casemore, our meals supervisor. We hope she will be back soon. Thanks go out to our clerk - bookkeeper for filling in. This week we will be watching a slide show of our Christmas festivities. Everyone is looking for- ward to seeing themselves on screen. The next foot clinic has been scheduled for Jan. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. Please call the day centre at35'7-1440 or 357-1445 for an appointment. During the last week of January and the first week of February, we will be starting our ceramics program. If any volunteers would like to help during these two weeks, please let us know. Members of the tenth anniversary, ad hoc committee are reminded of the meeting scheduled for Friday, Jan. 20, at 1:30p.m. Loss of hearing is North America's largest, yet least recog- nized, physical ailment in peopleof all ages, but particularly among the - elderly. Most elderly people will get glasses or take medications, but will not be seen wearing a hearing -aid. - This can result in isolation and withdrawal. They have been participating in snow materials and painting pic- tures of themselves. They are looking forward to going skating with their reading buddies. — Kelly Watson Mrs. Kerr's Grade is are reading The Owl and the Pussycat. They're researching owls and snowy things. In math they're doing money and Roman numerals. The Care Bears are coming to help them tell time. — Andrea Gauld This week Miss Turner's class is doing a snow centre. They also are researching winter sports. Miss Turner's class did a winter -safety poster for the classes. The Grade 2 class is studying volume and mass of snow In math the Grade 2s are measuring things in centimetres and metres. They are also making treats from snow. Chrissy Kerr has recovered from the chicken pox and they 'are glad she is back. Every night the Grade 2s take a book home and read it. The person who reads the most books will win something. Michael Blackwell is the star student of the week. — David Carter Mrs. Martin's class is drawing snow scenes for art and they are trying to draw exactly. A pupil, Amanda Wattam, is missed and is being tutored due to breaking her leg. The class also is doing research. in pairs for their pioneer projects, telling time by the minute and multiplying numbers. Marc Poulin Mr. Sakasov's class finally went on its field trip. They went on a wagon ride and cut down a tree pioneer style. The children are starting to write out their speeches for public speaking. Some of the kids are going into the big chess tour- nament that starts next week. — Matt Elmslie Mrs. Schedler's Grade 5 has been busy this month. They have had a math test and are working on the "Three I's", novels and speeches. They have started a new unit in science about electricity. In art, they have trade snow mobiles. Nao came back to visitthe class and talked about the Chinese custom.. of New Year's, Mrs. OverhoIt's class had a wonderful winter holiday and the students are glad to be back,. Before the holidays, however, they enjoyed making crafts for their parents and joining in the carol sing and gift service. Mrs. Overholt held a tea last month for the parents and thanks them for coming. Also .last month they went 'to Lewis Flowers to see the beautiful decorations. Last Monday, they had a delicious lunch with Mrs. Train's class sharing a New Year's dinner. -- Andrea Plumb Mr. Shaw's Grade 8 elass com- pleted a unit in math recently on measurement. They started working on speeches and had try -outs for the musical "The' Beverly Hillbillies". In gym they are playing volleyball and starting another unit in French. Some of the students are working on science fair projects, while the rest of the class is working on a unit on chemicals. The students have been busily working on their course selections for Grade 9. The course selections must be handed in this week. —Angela Swanson SPECIAL EVENTS This week the Grade 7s and 8s are having try -outs for the musical "The Beverly Hillbillies". There will be singing and acting involved. This special presentation will be held in the school auditorium the week before the March break. This week the F. E. Madill senior instrumental band played for the students. We were impressed with Mr. Matthews' group. She taught us how to fringe, curl and score paper and to make cone-shaped noses. Soon we will be going skating a the arena. In room four, we have the computer and are enjoying usin "Story Writer" for the first time of creating characters. Miss Sanderson's Grade 2-3 class is lucky. Mandy Jeschkeit joined our class last Monday. She is seven years old. She likes to write stories and read books. She came from Kenilworth. Danny Jeschkeit and Amber McKay are new students in Mrs. Al - cock's Grade 2 class. Danny is seven years old. He likes to learn math and Amber likes spelling. We have started our times tables. We are using a parachute in gym and our teacher is reading us a book called Charlotte's Web. We had a French test on colors last ek. We are doing a novel study in USSR (Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading?. We also are having a white elephant sale. —Dennis and David Grade 4 has a ski trip planned for Jan. 23. We learned how to folk dance last week and read Read All About It. We have two hamsters in our class. Their names are Sparky and Sam.
