Legion PeeWees get split
in recent tournament play
The Wingham Legion PeeWeek
travelled to New Hamburg last
Sunday, Jan. 8, to participate in a
tournament. The lads defeated
Mooretown 4-0, but fell to defeat at
the hands of Parkhill.
In the match with Mooretown, the
first period remained scoreless until
there Was one minute left on the
clock, when Jonathon Balzer scored, -
assisted by Jonathon Lane and
Jason Evans.
Wingham opened the scoring early
in the second frame when Brett
Sangster stored' from Balzer and
Gord Welch. The second period saw
two more goals: Lane, assisted by
Eric Deyell and Matthew Hunter
and then one minute later when
Balzer scored, assisted by Ryan
Leibold and Marc Poulin<
The Legion PeeWees found them-
selves up against a much more
aggressive team when they played
Parkhill. The local lads played
evenly thr.. ' : out most of the first
period. Wingham's goal carne at the
3:15 mark by Balzer, assisted by
Evans and Sangster.
Parkhill scored late in the first to
take a 2-1 lead. The second period
was scoreless. Both teams were
sharp, but the Wingham lads
couldn't put the puck behind the
Parkhill netminder.
Coming out from the break, the
Wingham boys were outclassed and
--- found themselves falling farther
behind. Parkhill scored three
unanswered goals.
The Wingham Legion PeeWees
started the New Year off with a 5-3
loss to Howick. Sangster opened the
scoring early in the first period,
assisted by Bart Cameron.
However, the • Wingham score-
board remained unchanged until the
third period when Lane scored,
unassisted, at 10:1. Wingham's last
goal came in the final two minutes of
the game, off the stick of Lane,
unassisted.

What more could yen ask froma
hockey team? First -of all, the F. E.
Madill Mustangs engagedin two
competitive, physical, fast,
emotional and entertaining games
last week.
And secondly, they emerged
victorious in both contests.
Last Wednesday, the Mustangs
took on the Exeter high school
hockey team at Wingham., Earlier in
the season, Madill had trounced
Exeter 8-1 in an exhibition contest.
Though Madill again won, a
seemingly -stronger South Huron
team battled F. E. to a more
respectable 5-3 loss.
The spark that ignited the Madill
team to victory came late in the first
frame with the teams knotted at one
goal apiece. Jason Bloemberg,
attempting .to check . an, Exeter
player, got his stick up too high and
was given a five-minute major and
game misconduct penalty.
The Mustangs were facing a five-
minute manpower disadvantage and
only had three defencemen left on
the bench. However, not only did
Madill kill off the penalty, the team
scored the next two goals to put the
contest out of reach.
The star of the game for the
Mustangs was defenceman Peter
Strong, who was credited with three
assists and succeeded in
intimidating South Huron with at
least three punishing body checks.
Tom McDonald shared the point
lead with Strong on two goals,
including the game winner and one
assist, while Rod Cayley had a goal
and one assist.
The other Madill markers went to
Bradcrawford and Rod Crich.
The Mustangs travelled to. Clinton
last Friday (yes, Friday the 13th)
for an encounter against Central
Huron, If you'll recall, it was Clinton
who whipped Madill 10-4 in the
Mustangs' only loss of the season.
However, with the line of Tom and
Ken McDonald and Jason Kraemer
in peak form, Madill played a very
physical, emotional and fast -skating
game and enacted a measure of
revenge as the Mustangs downed the
home team 5-4,
Each of ' -Madill's five- goals was
produced by the aforementioned
trio, with Kraemer netting a pair
and adding two assists. Ken
McDonald scored twice and added
two asists, while Tom McDonald
tallied the first goal of thegame to
go with his two assist's.
The game winner was a powerplay
marker, the only goal of the third
period, as Ken McDonald moved
across the Clinton blueline and over-
powered goaltender Richard Lynden
with a "cannonating drive" as
Danny Gallivan would have called,
it,
Strong again played his expected
"strong" defensive game, dishing
out three thunderous body checks
that made the Clinton forwards
think twice about entering F. E.'s
