The Iron
season momentu
The Wingham Junior 'C' Ironmen
split a pair of weekend games with a
5-3 win last Friday night in Walker-
ton and then suffered a 6-5 1os back
home Sunday to the Port Elgin
Bears.
In Sunday's match -up the Ironmen
were short-staffed as the club is
plagued by injuries. The boys came
up flat in the first period and found
themselves on the bottom end of a 4-
0 score.
The Bears added another marker
midway through the second before
the Ironmen were able _to finally
break the shut -out when Brett
Martin's snap shot beat the Port
Elgin goalie at 3:29 of the second.
Paul Brophy and Jamie Robinson
drew assists.
Once the Ironmen were able to
find the spot, they added another
goal to their credit, resulting from a
goalmouth scramble as Richard
Bowman came up with the loose
puck and fired it honie with
Robinson assisting. This brought the
Ironmen within three by period's
end.
The Ironmen came to life in the
third period as they attempted to
catch and Bears and scored a pairds
powerplay goals early in the period.
At 17:28, that extra effort paid off for
hard-working Brophy as he tapped
in the loose puck, assisted by Jeff
Walden and Mark McBride.
Just five minutes later, it was
Brophy capitalizing on the power
play to bring the Ironmenwithin one
goal of the Bears, with Martin and
Walden assisting.
Wingham continued to apply the
pressure, hoping to get the tying
goal, but the Bears weren't about to
give it up and with 3:17 remaining in
the game, Port Elgin scored the
insurance marker they needed.
The Ironmen kept on pressing
right up until the end and with only
1:30 remaining in the game,
defenceman McBride dented the
twine for the home club with Walden
and Brophy assisting on the goal.
The Ironmen pulled netminder
Greg McClement in a last-ditch
effort to get the tying goal, but time
ran out on them and the Bears
captured the 675 win.
Last Friday night's gamy also was
a bad start for the Ironmen as they
ound themselves down 2-0 after the
first period and had to play -hockey if
hey were going to get into the
action.
It wasn't until midway through the
econd before top scorer Brad
Murray lit up the goal light with
Martin and Dan Gilchrist assisting.
The 'Blackhawks scored on the
power play at 4:30 of the second
when Mike Lemenchick beat out
Ironmen netminder Murray Foxton
o put the Hawks -up 3-1.
Just eight seconds later, Martin
allied for Wingham as he sent home
Gilchrist pass.
The third period belonged solely to
the Ironmen as they played a good
olid period -to pull out the win. Just
seconds into the frame, Martin
ent home a J. C. Hewitt pass to tie
e game at 3-3.
The Ironmen scored on the power
play midway through the third off
he stick of Bowman. Captain
ilchrist fired home the insurance
arker to ice the win with 4:23
emaining on the clock.

IRON MARKERS -- The Ironmen
just couldn't seem to put together
three solid periods of hockey this
weekend with a couple of late -
starters, and that is exactly what
they are going to have to do if they
intend to end up in the first place
overall.
With only five games remaining in
regular .season play, they can't
afford to leave it until late in the
game to get their act together. With
some key players sidelined with
injuries, they are going to have to

On Sunday, the Shoppers returned
to the pond on Victoria Street to host

be the most exciting game so far this
season.
Curtis Hunter led things off for
Wingham as he poked home a
rebound three minutes into the
opening period. Kevin Hogg and
Leibold assisted.
Mount Forest got that one back on
analmost-identical play . two
minutes later, then went ahead at
the 10:22 -mark. That second Mount
Forest goal wouldstand up until
midway through the second period
when Adams put Wingham back on
even terms on a fine set-up by.
Alexander and Jeremy Hickey.

three minutes later on a beautiful
