KINCARDINE — Wingham's Le-
gion Lads made. a strong showing at
-last week's Silver Stick PeeWee
Hockey Tournament in Kincardine,
working their way up to challenge
for the "C" Division championship.
Zurich 3, Wingham 0
The Lads went down 3.0 to a strong
team from Zurich in their first
tournament game. Wingham was
outshot by a large margin, but
defensively they came up strong.
Gordon Welch, Jason Evans, M.
Poulin and S. Pegg were particular-
ly competent and their confidence
increased as the tournament pro-
gressed. Johnathan Balzar and
Johnathan Lane were clearly the
best forwards in the game.
Wingham 2, Hiilsburgh 1
A mate% against Hillsburgh was
one of the PeeWee Lads' best
defensive games of the year. The
forwards back -checked extremely
well and the defensemen held their
ground. In the third period Matt
Elmslie made three key saves.
When the buzzer ended the game,
Wingham came out on top with a 2-1
score, even though the Lads were
outshot 16 to 11. Legion scorers were
Balzer from R. Leibold and Lane,
and Bart Cameron scoring the
winner with Brett Sangster
assisting, both in the second frame.
Wingham 2, Elma-Logan 0
The Legion Lads expected to win
against Elma-Logan; and they did;
but it was not the cake walk they
expected. Once again, tenacious
back -checking and a defense that
hardly let the opposition cross the
Wingham blueline -made Robbie
Johnston's second shut -out of the
year very easy.
Wingham outshot Elma-Logan 28
to 3. Balzer netted the winner early
in the first period from Sangster.
The next goal came with., five
seconds remaining in the third
period, off the stick of Lane, with',
Cameron assisting. This win enabled
the Lads to finish second in their
group, and enter the medal round,
Wingham 2, Tara 1
Wingham faced off' against a
Novice A team
ties Brussels
sPeedY and aggressive Yara 'teen'
and stood up to the challenge with
another 2-1 win in a tight defellsive
struggle. Shots on goal by .beth
teams were very Iow; Tara had 11,
and Wingham 10... three games in
one day khould have taken its toll on
the Lads, but they overcame their
tigue as the game got undeiway.
Tara: opened the scoring in, the
second, period i!yith, their only goal.
Two niinUtes later, Sangster tiedthe
game assisted by M. Hunter and
Welch. With two minutes remaining
in the second frame, Balzer netted
the game winner with Sangster and
Welch registering assists.
In the third period, the defence
closed the door on the Tara shooters.
The defensive core of G. Welch, J.
Evans and M. Poulin did yeomen
service during the day's three
games. S. (Pegg received a bruised
, leg from the first game and was
unable to play. Matt Elmslie took a
stick under the chin that put him on
the ice; but he rebounded to stone-
wall the Tara team, and earned him-
self "player of the game" designa-
tion from the Wingham coaching
staff. -

Their quest for a regional Silver
Stick Championship, however, came
to a halt, as they lost to a fine squad
