in close consolation final
The Wingham Great China House
PeeWees, under the guidance of
coach George Patterson and man-
ager Wilson Daw, participated in a
hockey tournament at .Port Elgin,
advancing to the consolation final
where they were edged out 3-2 in a
close, hard-fought contest against
Tiverton.
Wingham's opposition in the first
game was a fast -skating team from
Harriston. The Great China House
PeeWees jumped into the lead when
Peter Shaw slapped in a rebound off
Shawn Daw's shot from the point.
Shortly after, the Harriston goalie
stopped Jeremy Brown in two
breakaways.
Wingham added to the lead when
Brown fed Terry Thynne a beautiful
pass and Thynne fired the puck just
inside the right goalpost. Then it was
Harriston's turn and after several
good saves by Kelly McInnes, man-
aged to get the pick past the
Wingham goalie.
With only 19 seconds left in the
game and Wingham playing short
handed, Harriston scored the
equalizer which sent the game into
sudden death overtime. Less than a

Win;: ' in will -have, its own in-
ternational hockey match Thursday
as Wingham Kinsmen Bantams take
on a team from Herlev, Denmark at
Lockridge Memorial Arena.
The Denmark contingent of 25
boys and seven adults were .brought
to Canada by the Seaforth Minor
Hockey Association,; and are billeted
in homes in Seaforth while' tourins..
the area. They've been here since
December 26.
Wingham Minor Hockey president
Al Harrison says the team is playing
exhibition games in Mitchell, Sea -
forth, Wingham, Listowel, Kin-
cardine and Mount Forest during the
two weeks they're here. "All these
communities pay their share toward
hosting the Denmark team," Mr.
Harrison claims. "Wingham pays a
portion of their travel expenses and
sanction fees. We're grateful to local
service clubs and organizations that
have contributed toward our ex-
penses, including local Lions Club,
Kinsmen, Optimists, Wingham
Legion and the Wingham., Silver
Stick Hockey committee."
The team will arrive in Wingham
at 3.30 p.m. Thursday, tour the
CKNX radio station, enjoy a full -
course supper at the Legion, then at
6 p.m, head for the Arena for a pre-
game warm-up. The game begins at
7 p.m.
The Denmark tour is part of an
ongoing exchange between Can-
adian and European minor hockey
teams, Mr. Harrison explains. Twp
years ago, a team from Seaforth had
the opportunity to tour several areas
of Europe.
The Denmark team also will have
the opportunity to see Toronto's CN
Tower, visit the Skydorne, and make
•a trip to Niagara Falls before re-
turning home Jan. 8.
SW'
minute into the overtime session,
Harriston potted the winning goal
and the loss put Wingham into the
consolation round.
Wingham came out flying in the
second game and this was bad news
for the Bayfield squad. Brown's first
shot toward the net was redirected
by a Bayfield defenceman into his
own net past a startled goalie.
Wingham's second score was a pic-
ture play involving Brown and
Steven Anger who assisted On
Thynne's goal.
Chris Patterson, who took over
goaltending duties from Kelly
McInnes in this game, was just as
hot as McInnes was in the first
contest. Wingham's third marker
came as Shawn Gedcke blasted
home a rebound with Shaw and
Anger assisting.
Bayfield scored two quick un-
answered ed goals which set the stage -••
for an exciting final five minutes,
but Wingham held off a frantic last-
minute Bayfield attack to win the
game 3-2.
There was excitement in anti-
cipation of the consolation final
game against a strong Tiverton
team.
However, before Wingham could
get in gear, the Great China House
PeeWees were facing a two -goal
deficit. Gedeke's backhander then
found the mark after a crisp pass
from Jason Kleist.
Then it was Tiverton's turn to
again move two goals ahead, but
Kleist put the rubber over the goal
line on a nice setup by Danny
McPherson.
Wingham pulled the goalie for the
last Minute and the action was fast
and furious around the Tiverton net.
However, the effort fell short and
Tiverton went onto win by a 3-2
count.
Congratulations are in order for
all the players — Kelly McInnes,
Jason Crawford, Chris Patterson,
Dan McPherson, Jeremy Brown,
Shawn Gedcke, Patrick Nelemans,
Shawn Daw, Steve Anger, Peter
Shaw, Terry Thynne, Jason -Kleist,
Todd Harrison and Jamie MacKay
— for their efforts in providing some
exciting entertainment for the
spectators on hand.
