Splitegasquad Tyke teams
rack up two more, wins
The Wingham Tykes won both
g3mes of a "split -squad" double
header last Wednesday, Dec. 28, at
the Lockridge Memorial Arena. The
local boys slipped past Brussels 5-4.
in the first game and then the second
squad downed Howick 6-3.
The match -up with Brussels was a
real cliffhanger from start to finish.
Chris Roberts gave Wingham an
early 1-0 lead .on a goal from Adam
McGuiggan, but Brussels rebounded
quickly to tie.
Andrew Laing then notched his
first of three for Wingiiiin, assisted
by Tyler Anger. However, Brussels
replied with one of its own and the
first period ended in a 2-2 deadlock.
Brussels took a 3-2 lead early in
the second period, but this time
Wingham bounced back as Laing
fired his second from Justin
MacTavish, then completed his hat
trick before the period ended,
assisted by Jay Leitch. The score
after two frames was Wingham, 4,
Brussels, 3.
Brussels wasted no time in getting
the equalizer early in the third. With
plenty of good end-to-end action and
some fine goaltending at both ends
of the rink, it appeared the game
would end in a tie.
However, late in the period, John
Skinn completed a fine, three-way
flossing play from Zack 09Krafka
and Jay Leitch to give Wingham the
lead. Brussels put tremendous
pressure on in the dying seconds, but
the defensive pair of Leitch and
Aaron McBurney held firm and
Wingham goaltender Joel Leitch
made two clutch saves to preserve
the 5-4 victory.
Wingham 6, Howick 3 .
Game two began in pretty much
the same way as the earlier match
had ended. Chris Cameron notched
the first goal from Curtis Ritchie
and Jonathon Montgomery to give
Wingham the early lead. However;

the lead was short-lived as Howick
tied the score only minutes later.
Laing, back for game two, gave
the locals a 24 lead from Jean-Paul
Bekasiask. Finally, the "Merkley
line" broke out of its slump as
Matthew Merkley scored from Jeff
Leitch and Phil Adams. The score
after the first,frame was Wingham,
3, Howick, 1.
Howick came out flying to start
the second period and got two quick
goals to knot the game at three -all.
Again it was Laing who gave his
team a boost with his second of, the
game, then Jeff Leitch scored from
linemates Merkley and Adams to
give Wingham -a 5-3 lead with two
periods complete.
Wingham's John Skinn, 'also
logging double duty, scored the only
goal of the third from Darrin .Cole
and Leitch Again the defence, led
by Joel Leitch, held firm to earn the
victory.
All members of the Tyke team saw
plenty of ice time in these games,
particularly Laing, Skimi, Cameron
and Leitch in goal, who had to play
both games to replace vacationing
teammates.
The Tykes have several games
scheduled for early January,
including a return match in Brussels
and a home game against Ayton this
Saturday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m.
