Wingham's Optimist Atoms gave
themse1v some gifts of the season
with three straight wins in league
action leading up to the Christmas
weekend. The locals defeated Mil-
verton twice, 4-3 and 10-1 and then
downed Listowel 6-1 to make a clean
sweep of the week.
In a game they should have
owned, the Optimist Atoms went to
Milverton and played Santa Claus to
the Milverton goalie's Scrooge.
The Wingham club played much of
the game in the Milverton end, but
could not seem to capitalize on its
many scoring chances, thanks, in
part, to a pretty good night for Mil-
verton goalie Jamie Roulston.
Wingham opened the scoring
about halfway through the period on
a marker by Arley Pautler, assisted
by Travis Baier. But Milverton
came right back to tie it less than 30
seconds later, just to keep Wingham
from getting too confident.
Wingham came out of the first
period with a 2-1 lead. Baier scored
the go-ahead marker, assisted by
Mark Gibson andJeremy Creeden.
In the second period, it was all
Wingham as the boys cashed in on a
couple of their many chances to take
a 4-1 lead. Creeden scored the third
goal, assisted by Todd Edgar and
Josh Johnston notched the fourth,
assisted by Gibson and Creeden.
However, in the third frame, the
Wingham club went into one of its
'notorious defensive shells, the kind
where they forget what the other end
of the rink looks like and try to play
the entire frame in their own zone.
It cost them a couple of goals, one

up to 4-3 for ` Wingham. But they
managed to hold off a determined
`Milverton team and deny them their
first win of the season, ending up
coming home with a hard-fought 4-3

Wingham 10, Milverton 1
It's hard to say whether it was the
tough practice or the new sweaters
that did it, but when these two teams
met again last Thursday night in
Belmore, it was like an, entirely
different Wingham team on the ice.
And the score showed it.
The Wingham boys opened up a 2-0
first -period lead on goals by John-
ston, assisted by Gibson and Neil
Mowbray and Creeden, unassisted.
But it was the second period when
they really caught fire. The passing
and teamwork they've shown
flashes of in previous games seemed
to all coxae together as they racked
up another five goals. Several of
these goals were fine individual
efforts, while others showed the kind
of heads -up passing they're going to
need against some of the other
teams in the league.
Second period Wingham marks-
men were: Johnston, assisted by
Jeff King; Edgar, assisted by Shawn
Walker; Creeden, unassisted; Gib-
son, assisted' by Johnston and
Creeden, again unassisted.
Going into the third period with a
7-0 lead, the Wingham boys gave
their fans a scare when they allowed
Milverton's Scott Baillie to score a
short-handed, breakaway goal just
over a minute into the final frame.
For a few minutes it looked as if
the locals were headed for another of
their infamous third -period
scrambles. But they put it all back
together again and scored three
more goals to roll to an easy 10-1
win.
Goal scorers for Wingham in the
third were: Baier from Johnston and
Mowbray; Creeden on an end-to-end
rush assisted by Wingham goalten-
der Craig Baynton and Johnston
rounded it out, assisted by Gibson
and King.
Wingham 6, Listowel 1
Wingham's always had trouble
with Listowel. This particular team
has had seasons when Listowel clubs
have dominated and others when the
best they could , manage was a tie.
This year they've lost one, tied one
and on this occasion, won one.
Baier . opened the scoring for
Wingham 444 tv•,'o mintus Onto the
game, assist by Johnston and
Gibson on one of that line's patented
three-way passing plays around the
net. But Listowel came right back
less than 30 seconds later to tie the
score. With just over a minute left in
the first period, Johnston gave
Wingham a 2-1 lead, assisted by
Baier and Gibson, again in a fine
three-way goal -mouth passing play.
In the second period, Wingham got
two more goals. Creeden scored at
around the three-minute mark,
assisted by Walker and Walker also
assisted on Wingham's fourth goal,
this one, scored by Edgar. Creeden
also assisted on that one.
And this time the Wingham boys
didn't collapse in the third. Oh, they
slackened off a bit, but not enough
for Listowel to stage any significant
kind of comeback. They did,
however, put another couple of goals
up on the board. Creeden scored,
assisted by Mowbray and Walker,
and Baier assisted by Johnston:
The past two games have shown
the Optimist Atoms' followers that
this .team can play a very entertain-
ing kind of 4iockey. Creeden and
Baier are a couple of players who
have shown some strong individual
effort.
Wingers Johnston and Gibson are
passing as if they've been at this
game for years and the defence is
moving the puck out of the zone and
challenging the opposition's blueline
like old pros.
In fact, as the statistics show,
everyone's getting into the act lately
and we're all hoping the trend
continues into the new year.
The next game for the Optimist
Atoms was Tuesday in Seaforth. The
team would have needed all its skills
to adequately challenge that
powerhouse club.
