They finally named this: baby Beatrice,
With Grandniother's regal consent.
The Winter Olympics were held in the West,
In the City of Calgary.
We were charged with suspense and emotion,
While viewing it all on TV.
• .Thiswastheyearofpoliticians,
And we listened -to speeches they made, -
John Turner, Ed Broadbent and Brian Mulroney,
And the pros and cons of free trade!.
Did you go to Church every Sunday?
Or watch it at borne on TV.
Did you support Jimmy and Tammy?
When they were requesting money!
Earth's ozone layer is slowly decreasing,
Scientists claim they've the answer.
"Stay out of that sun," they warn us,
If you don't, you're bound to get cancer.
And to prove their theory, remember,
Last summer, we were crying for rain
While we scorched in the heat for weeks on end,
An we did was perspire and complain.
President Reagan is retiring,
-Once the White HOUSe he -and Nancy vacate,
George Bush will-beRoimi&s successor,. .
To rule the 51 states.
What's making the latest headlines these days?
Mostly bad! Like drug raids,
Floods, hurricanes and leaked PCBs,
Steroids and incurable AIDS.
A surprise to many, a shock to us all,
But really, it was no mistake.
It registered six on the Richter Scale,
We survived, of all things, an earthquake!
We also survived a recent election,
As we chose our town council with care,
Now a lady sits in one council seat
And Ian Moreland, is our mayor.
As all of you know, some landmarks are gone
From our fair little Wingham town.
Though it's nice to see themFrestored.or rebuilt,.
We hateto see them torn -down.
Do you -really like doughnuts and pizza?
- • Weil then you'll be happy to hear,
That the mall which is being erected,
Will be serving you in the New Year.
Perhaps you'd prefer a sandwich or muffin?
Along with your coffee or tea.
Well, come to "Charlotte's Web" if you do,
Where gifts and antiques you will see.
Is there more of you than you care to admit?
While fitness you can't tolerate?
Well, just take your body to "Slender Concept",
And a new you appears while you wait.
What are the prospects for '89?
Will the new council fix the dam?
Will the conservation and natural resources,
Name their lagoon "Lake Wingham"?
Will recreation fight for a complex?
And build Wingham a mini sky dome.
Will our athletes keep winning medals?
Bringing honor and glory back home.
Will our globe-trotting Casey keep travelling?
No doubt he's already made plans.
Will we ever learn how to recycle?
And sort out our glass and tin cans?
Well, another year is just about spent,
And so is my annual rhyme.
Now wouldn't it be a wonderful thing,
If we learned how to recycle time.
Happy New Year.
