The Wingham Optimist Atoms won - their first tournament of the season recently at Palmerston. The lads recorded a 5-3 win over Harriston, then defeated Sballow Lake, also by a 5-3 count. The two wins propelled the team into the championship match against Arthur, which Wingham won 3-1. Travis Baier and Josh Johnston each bad six -point weekends. Baler had three goals and three assists, while Johnston had feur goals and two assists. They swept all three of their ice -dance divisions - to become the overall junior medalists. Kevin Wheeler of RR 5, Brussels and his senior pairs' partner Michelle Menzies of Preston, also will advance to the divisionals. The divisional championships are slated for Jan. 12 to 14. Winners then advance to the Canadian National Figure Skating Championships, being held in Chicoutimi, Quebec, in Feburary. j. Belgrave Novice team is blanked by Hens -a -II The Belgrave Novice hockey team played Hensall Dec. 7, losing 6-0. Peter Irwin, Luke Lockridge and Michael McBurney worked hard to keep the puck out of the Belgrave end, assisted by Tem Pfeiffer in the Belgrave net, who played another great game. David MeBurney, Jennifer Black, Jeremy Campbell, Ryan Cook, Wayne Fenton and Vaughn Vincent all tried hard to maintain play in the Hensall end, but could not beat the Hensall goalie. In a match played Dec. 5 in Goderich, the teem lost 54. Fenton and David McBurney scored in the first frame for Belgrave. Jason Curtis drew an assist. McBurney later added another tally for Belgrave. The team travelled to Brussels Dec. 3. It was Belgrave's Bratearly- ai& R EJOICE morning game, but they were ready to play. Belgrave showed extra spark and controlled much of the play during the first and third periods. Cook, assisted by Campbell, started the searin. Defencemen Lockridge, David nuke, Michael McBurney and Irwin helped to keep the puck in the Brussels end, Fenton, assisted by Campbell and Cook, scored Belgrave's second goal David McBurney sewed twice with Campbell and Curtis assisting on his first marker. Beigrave's final gold was scored by Fenton.
