ROYAL CANADIAN AIR CADETS
543 SQUADRON, WINGHAM
By Rudy Hooftman
From Friday, Sept. 23 to Sunday,
Sept. 25, the squadron held its
annual basic training weekend at the
Brussels arena. Under the command
of Capt. Mac Anderson, this.exercise
provided new recruits with the
opportunity to become familiar with
the workings of the Air Cadet
curriculum.
For the older cadets, the weekend
was an occasion to hone their skills
in the areas of planning, co-
operation and leadership.
The exercise is unique in that the
basic training subjects are
telescoped into one single weekend
rather than over a prolonged period
of time. The experience benefits
both the recruits and the squadron.
The new cadets are able to make up
their minds whether or not to
- become part of the Air Cadet
organization and the squadron has
the opportunity to work as a team. ,
The following recruits
participated: John Brak, Jerrod
Button, Karl Wiens, Kevin Procter,
Fabianne Glauser, Michelle
Congram, Sarah Allan, Kevin
Murphy, Aaron Chapman, Chris
Templeman, Vincent Brewer, Jason
Kleist, Mike Claus, Tim Smith, Chris
Thomas and Keith McInnis.
The junior cadets receiving
advanced training were Cornelia
Leuenberger, Heather Humphrey,
Jennie Chettleburgh, Greg Lee, Paul
Judge, Anna Sakasov and Paul
Sakasov.
Chief cook for the weekend was
Cpl. Marilyn Mayberry, assisted by
a clean-up crew of LACs Beatrice
Leuenberger, Richard Wilts, Karen
Procter, Kim Mayberry and Keith
Murphy.
The teaching staff consisted of
LACs Jane Ann Kennedy and Sean
Murphy (citizenship); LAC Gerald
Moore (engines) ; Cpl. Peter
Hooftman (air frames, principles of
flight); CpL David MacRae and LAC
Kim Mayberrry (leadership); Cp.
Allan Congram (meteorology); W02
Marjorie Campbell (junior drill); -CI -
Erika Hooftman (air navigation Mick:,
0Cdt, Debbie Szipocs (test results).
At the squardon's regular parade
in the Armouries building last
Wednesday evening there was a kit
inspection for the junior and
intermediate cadets. These cadets
also attended a map -reading class
instructed by Sgt. Les Philips. The
recruits were taught by W02
Marjorie Campbell how to take care
of their uniforms and boots. Some
recruits were kitted as well.
This Wednesday, Oct. 5, there will
be a sports night for all cadets at the
F. E. Madill Secondary School. No
uniforms are to be worn, but gym
clothing is essential. Cadets will
meet at the Armouries at 7 p.m. and
proceed to the high school.
