The visit was organized through the Lions Club in an effort to promote Sunday's Walk-a®dog-athon and to show the youngsters just what a guide dog does. All in the eyes of a dog By Cheryl Leitch Last Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Wingham Public School students were visited by Susan Bell of Goderich and her seeing -eye dog, Inka. Ms. Bell discussed and demon- strated how a guide dog is not a pet, but a highly -trained animal responsible for guiding a blind person from place to place 'safely and independently. The students learned that the guide dog can be reco ized by the leather harness and U-shaped handle which is held in the owner's left hand. When it is working, the dog should not be disturbed, even touched, without the owner's permission. Such anction could be dangerous to them both. The youngsters were amazed to learn that although the dog is highly intelligent, it does not possess any supernatural or unusual powers. Instead, the dog reacts to specific commands given by the owner, such as "left", "right" or "forward" and so on. The owner and not the dog must know where to go. As of 1979, a law was passed in Ontario giving any blind person accompanied -by a guide dog the right to enter any public place, in- cluding restaurants, snack bars, theatres, hotels and any form of public transportation. Grant Chisholm and Dawson Pollock, members of the Wingham Lions Club, also were on hand to inform Wingham students of the upcoming 10 -kilometre Walk-a-dog- athon to raise money for visually - impaired Canadians and programs which benefit them. The children were excited to find that they could walk any pet, even a stuffed animal, in the Walk-a-dog- athon. Ms. Bell also visited Sacred Heart School Wingham and the Turn- berry Central School. Three Ms of St. Andrew's Pres- byterian Church, Wingham, got off to a good start with a lively singsong last week. The meeting was hosted by Merle Wilson and Eva Carr. Miss Wilson gave an interesting meditation on the "Shepherd's Song", explaining the habits of sheep, saying they like to drink from quiet waters. Sheep have learned to fear no harm, she continued, as they depend upon their shepherd to protect them. Mrs. Carr read the scripture from the Book of John, the 23rd Psalm and led in prayer. Two meaningful vocal solos were rendered by Catherine MacDonald, accompanied by Cora Robertson. The president, Alex Robertson, read a poem entitled "It Is in Your Face". However you live your life, it will show in your face. If you live close to God, Mr. Robertson said, you don't have to tell it as it will show. "The Lord Is My Pacemaker", a thought suitable for our busy lives, was given by Miss Wilson. The main -feature of the evening was a slide presentation by Muriel Coultes of Belgrave on her trip to Ethiopia last March. Her group was a guest of tfae Ethiopian Orthodox Church andthey made arrangements for them to see much more than they otherwise would have seen. Sunday is a very important day in, Ethiopia, Mrs. Coultes reported: Everyone goes to church and the services last all day. Some of the roads in that country are very, very bad and when they went to where the fighting was going on, it was frightening. Mrs. Coultes was thanked by Mrs. Carr. Refreshments were served and a social half-hour spent. BRUSSELS CHAMPIONS The Brussels Football Team were Ontario Champions in the Intermediate section of the WFA in the summer of 1907. Fellow citizens gave the boys a rousing reception and Brussels was lively and gay. Wingham Band provided excellent music for the evening. R. W.
