have "Little Shop of Horrors'',
premiering last week at. the Huron
Country Playhouse near Grand
Bend.
While "Little Shop" nay not be
perfect — it is fun. A hit Broadway
musical, it features the lyrics of
Howard Ashman, as well as the
music of Alan fienken. Based on
Roger Corrnan's 1960 science -fiction
film, "Little Shop of Horrors", the
musical, ran on Broadway for a
number of -years and even was made
into a hit movie several years ago.
The people at the Huron Country
Playhouse had a. challenge on their
hands. in creating Audrey. 11, the
unusual- little plant that grows into a
mOnstrous carnivore. The gigantic
Audrey II puppet is manipulated by
Terry, •Todd and its voice is provided
by Ted Pearson.
The story revolves around a
skidrow .flower shop owned and
operated by Mushnik, a debt -ridden
immigrantl and his two assistants,
Audrey and Seymour. They dream
• a leaving their humble sur-
roundings, but find themselves in a
rut.
That is, until the day when
Seymotir's experiments produce an

and dance on the skid -rim street.
Another real scene -stealer is
David Scammell, recreating Steve,
Martin's hilarious movie role as
Audrey's sadistic dentist boyfriend.
Scammell also has a number of
other cameo roles and is equally
good in all of then'.
"The Skid-ftow Four" provide
instrumental accompaniment.
These accomplished musicians are
superb, but sometimes .the in-
struments tend to drown out the
lyrics.
"Little Shop of Horrors" is **deed
an ambitious undertaking, a
production which requires
meticulous, timing and scene
changes. At thnes, the 'acfion going
on behind the scenes is rather
distracting, but generally it runs
smoothly.
"Little Shop" ?WS until Sept. 10 at
the Huron Country Playhouse main
stage.
