Who is right? -® L. W., Kitchener,

I am, and I can't tell you how
disappointed I am in the Canadian
Human Rights Commission for
making such a serious error in"
judgment. The commission is
establishing a very dangerous
precedent concerning. AIDS testing
in the workplace for vertain jobs.
They consider being AIDS virus free
a bona -fide occupational
requirement where an individual
assessment has determined no other
arrangement of duties is possible. It
is an essential rrequirement of any
position that:
a) re,, .employess to perform
"invasiveprocedures" on a patient,

• B and C (although thereis no
evidence.'to support that mandatory
AIDS testing should be necessary in
either case), I am totally opposed to
A that professional health care
workers, such as surgeons, should
be required to undergo AIDS testing.
This also suggests that anyone,
including registered nurses, who
may be required to inject a patient
also will have to undergo testing.
I challenge any doctor, health-
care professional or member of the
Human Rights ` Commission to tell
me how any patient in a health-care
setting (particularly during surgical
procedures) could possibly contract
AIDS. As I have said before, an.
AIDS -infected surgeon would have
to cut himself and bleed into an.
incision of the patient upon Whom he
was operating before there was any
remote possibility of the patient,
contracting AIDS.
Mandatory .AIDS testing for
employees ' orfor prospective ern:-
ployees should°be forbidden aid the
Human Rights ,Commission is
wrong. They are establishing a
precedent 'which could . give
employers the excuse they may be
looking: for to insist upon AIDS
testing, ultimately leading to.
discriminatory actions,
