New painting display
at Blyth Art Gallery
The final show this summer at the
Blyth Festival Gallery from Aug. 20
to Sept. 17 features the recent paint-
ings of popular artists Jo Manning
and Ron Walker.
The gallery exhibition opens Sat-
urday, Aug. 20 with a reception at
7:30 p.m. featuring the artists and,
special guests.
Sponsored by Canada Trust, this
show is titled "Aspects of Nature -
Mythical and Otherwise".
Jo Manning is a graduate of the
Ontario College of Art. She began
her career as a printmaker and has
exhibited extensively in Canada and
abroad.
Currently working as a painter
and deeply involved in the landscape
of the Blyth area, Ms. Manning has
received many international awards
for her etchings. She has lectured
widely on the topics of printmaking
and etching, and illustrated such
publications as the Catholic Sunday
Miss and poetry books.
Always encouraging to other art-
ists, she has been active in such
groups as the Canadian Society of
Painters and Etchers.
She won the Medal of Honor in
Frechen, Germany in 1980 and her
latest international shows were in
Portugal and Chile. As well as pri-
vate collections, Ms. Manning's
work is found in many corporate and
government collections including t
the National Gallery of Canada in
Ottawa. t
Ron- Walker, currently an art
teacher with the Huron County o
Board of Education, was born in
Saskatoon, Sask., and studied at the i
Regina College School of Art, and 52
the University of Saskatchewan un-
der Roy Kiyooka, Ron Bloore, Ken
Locheed and Art McKay.
In 1959 he received a graduate
scholarship to study at the Univers-
ity of Toronto where he obtained de-
grees in English and art education.
For eight years he taught art at
',the secondary school level with the
North York Board of Education and
in 1972 stopped teaching on a regular
basis to devote more time to making
art.
His prints and drawings have ap-
peared in Toronto art galleries such
as Merton and Gadatsy as well as
juried shows such as the Canadian
Society of Graphic Art and Canadian
Printmakers Showcase.
In 1976, he, moved to a country
property just outside of Blyth and
began teaching at Central Huron
Secondary School in Clinton. After a
1984 sabbatical trip to Crete where -
he painted in oils, he exhibited with
Artisan's Alley in London, Ontario.
Mr. Walker's present exhibition at
the Blyth Festival Gallery reflects a
keen interest in Huron County land-
scapes. His work is represented in
numerous private and public collec-
tions including Noranda Mines, the
Sudbury Board of Education and the
Art Gallery of Ontario.
The Blyth Festival Gallery is open
daily (except Sundays) and is free to
he public. Local artists' work is also
on display all , summer, adjacent to
he box office with glassworks,
weaving, pottery, stained glass and
ther crafts being featured.
