DAY CENTRE BAKE SALE - The Windham and Area bay Centre
for the Homebound hosted a very successful Sportsfest bake sale
last Saturday, morning at Riverside Park. Jean Renwick and Marie
deVos had the job of selling the delicious baked goods.
BIRD'S EYE VIEW - Alex MacDonald's workmen surveyed the
town from a precarious view last week atop the old Canadian Im-
perial Bank of Commerce building, now owned by Canadian Agra.
The work crew was kepairing a chimney on the three-storey building,
a job definitely not for those afraid of heights.

Cattle exports
increase to
United States
The Board of Directors of the un-
tailo Cattlemen's Association at
their recent meeting was presented
with an update on production and
trade by OCA Manager Graeme
Hedley.
He reported income from licence
fees at the end of June was modestly
above the same period in 1987 and
that income for the year would likely
be almost identical to 1987.
The drought in Western Canada,
he said, has resulted in about 25,000
more cows being exported live to the
United States, but that cow slaugh-
ter levels in Western Canada
through April, May and June were
virtually unchanged from a year
earlier.
Sources in Western Canada sug-
gest additional cow marketings are
cows which would otherwise have
been culled this fall.
Mr. Hedley reported fed cattle
slaughter in Ontario was down 7.5
per cent but was up 2.1 per cent in
Western Canada compared to the
first six months of 1987. Increased
carcass weights have offset lower
numbers so that accumulative beef
supply is only 2.2 per cent below a
year earlier.
Mr. Hedley reported live cattle ex-
ports to the United States in the first
six months of 19 were up by ap-
proximately 55,000 head to 177,700
head and that fed cattle exports to
the United States represented over
12 per cent of fed cattle production in
Canada in the first six, months of
19; .
Live cattle ,imports from the
United States at the end of June
were down 35 per cent from year
earlier levels.
Booth imports and exports of beef
and veal in the first six months of
19 are down approximately 10 per
cent from 1987 levels.
