Belgrave Sq:airis win
tournament at Walton
The Belgrave Squirts put every-
thing together last weekend to
defeat Clinton, Auburn and Goderich
to win the Walton tournament.
In its game against Clinton, Bel -
grave opened the scoring in the first
inning as the team pushed across
four runs. Mark Olson, Mike Colley
and Mike Carson,singled, Kris
Kriegar walked and then Doug
Wilson unloaded a triple.
Belgrave added another run in the
second when Trevor Machan
singled, moved to second on a walk
by Jason Rich and scored on Kevin
Procter's single.
In the third inning, singles by
Brandon Coultes, Golley and Carson
produced another run.
Belgrave wrapped up the scoring
in the fifth inning as Coultes added
another single, Golley walked and
Carson cranked a homerun to centre
field. Shawn Fair stroked a single,
but was left aboard. ,
Joel Pegg pitched the five -inning
9-0 win for Belgrave, tossing a no-
hitter and issuing two walks. He
faced only 17 batters and received
good defensive support.
Belgrave 2, Auburn 0
This game was deadlocked at 0-0
at the end of five regulation innings.
Finally, in the eighth, Pegg singled,
Golley walked and Carson ripped a
double to drive in both runs.
Carson had a perfect day at the
plate, adding two singles to go along
with his double. Aaron Coulter,
Wilson, Golley and Brandon Coultes
each added a single.
Pegg- went the distance for
Belgrre, scattering five hits and
walking two.
Belgrave 4, Goderich 3
The championship game

when Goderich hit he coreboard
with two runs on four singles.`
Goderich then added another, run in
the fifth on a walk and two singles. A
good throw by Machan and a tag by
catcher Peter Gusso cut down a
fourth run by Goderich.
Belgrave tied the game in the,
sixth on walks to Aaron Coultes and
Rich. Procter banged a key single up
the, middle to score Coultes. Rich
then crossed the plate when Pegg hit
into a fielder's choice. Carson.
punched a single to drive in Procter
and make it a new ball game.
Belgrave won it in the seventh
when Golley slapped a one -out single
to left field. He moved to second on a: ,
walk to Fair and then scored on a
single up the middle by Machan.
Joel Pegg gave up seven hits, no
walks and struck out six for the
victory.
A solid team effort produced the
championship trophy.
D. Wood leaves
Tuesday for
games in Poland
Although he failed' to, make the
Olympic cut-off height, Doug Wood
of Wingham will be competing in the
pole vault event with Canada's
Espoir team later this, month in
Poland.
Ranked as Canada's top pole
vaulter in the 23 -and -under
category, Wood leaves today for
West Berlin and then on to Poland
for several days of competition
before returning to Canada at the
end of this month.
He competed at several Olympic
qualifying, meets, but could not
reach the Canadian cut-off height of
:5.40._3netres.:How--everts-he is hot very.
-fair off the mark at 5.33 metres.
His father, Ken Wood of Wingham,
says his son is very hopeful about
competing in the 1992 Olympics,
adding that pole vaulters are
thought to reach their performance
peak at 25 or 26 years of age. Wood is
22 years old.
In the, meantime, he is training
hard at Toronto's York -Mazda
Track and Field Club, the same club
where world champion sprinter Ben
Johnson trains.
STEALING THIRD Lori Crawford, a member of the Wingham Pee -
Wee girls' softball tearn, stole third base and then home on a bad
throw in last week's gamei against Mitchell. The Winghatii girls nar-
rowly defeated their opponents 20-19.
THE 'WINGHAM PEEWEE GIRLS' softball team defeated Mitchell 20-19 in a close content last, week at
the Josephine Street ball park. Wendy McBride of Wingham cranked out a hit early in the match -up.
