anchors of C
News, - movies and comedy are the
anchors of CKNX-TV's program-
ming schedule when it starts out as
an independent broadcaster next
month.
The local station's application to
disaffiliate with the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation was
granted in December of 1986 and
since then the people at CKNX have
been busy arriving at a schedule
geared to the wants and needs of
people in midwestern Ontario.
Al Skelton, station manager, says
he is very excited about Sunday,
Sept. 4, the day CKNX-TV kicks off a
new era as an independent broad-
caster.
What this means to area viewers is
more locally -produced programs,
says Mr. Skelton, which is what
CKNX-TV does best — informing the
viewers of Midwestern Ontario
about people and events in their
communities.
In the area of television news,
CKNX is expanding its daily
programming by 50 per cent, to
three hours from the current two.
Major newscasts, Monday through
Friday, include "Agri -News and
Noon Report" at 12:30 p.m. and the
new half-hour magazine show
"Insight Magazine" at 5:30 p.m.
"Insight Magazine" will present
loca8 -produced features designed
specifically for the Midwestern
Ontario audience. Among the
features are health, fitness and
nutrition, an entertainment review,
a country music countdown and a
weekly feature on area high schools.
At 6 p.m., the "Insight News
Hour" will provide news, weather,
sports and farm markets and the
"Insight Late Edition" at 11 p.m.
will also be expanding to one hour.
There will be four half-hour news
packages on the weekends, at 6 and
11 p.m., to round out the total news
presentation.
Farm Editors Murray Gaunt and
Andy Williams will produce a
weekly, . half-hour farm show, en-
titled "The Family Farmer". This
program will be devoted to
agriculture and will air Saturday
evenings at 6:30 and again Sundays
at noon. ,.
The second key ingredient in, the
new independent line-up for CKNX-
TV is television movies, says Mr.
Skelton. A total of 20 feature-length
movies will be broadcast each week:
at noon, in the evening and late
night.
Over 1,200 movie titles have been
contracted, everything from
Socred leader preaches
Christianity over humanism
Referring to the count 's main-
stream Canadiarrpoliticai parties as
"the three shades of humanism",
the president of the Social Credit
Party of Canada says his party is
offering voters a Christian alter-
native in the upcoming federal
election.
Harvey Lainson, a Listowel resi-
dent and pastor of the Missionary
Church in town, said the Socreds
have three main purposes set out on
their agenda: to champion some of
the biblical principles currently
being ignored by the administration,
to raise issues other parties are not,
and to offer voters a Christian way
of doing things.
"We are by no means a single
issue party," Mr. Lainson said add-
ing that the Socreds have a broad
agenda well-equipped to run all
aspects of governmental affairs.
As well, he noted, the Conser-
vatives, Liberals and New Demo-
crats all follow humanist doctine
which doesn't account for Christian
principles:
Public meetings
held for zoning
Public meetings were held at the
first monthly meeting of Turnberry
council to discuss two separate
zoning bylaw amendments.
The first meeting was held to
discuss an amendment which would
see the northwest corner of Lot 4,
Con. 8, changed to agricultural
small holding from a general
agriculture designation. The new
designation would permit a
residence to be built at the site.
The property is owned by Deputy
Reeve Doug Fortune and he
declared a conflict of interest on the
discussion and subsequent vote.
The second public meeting con-
cerned status zoning Lots 238-239 in
Lower Town. The property, , owned
by Mr. and Mrs. Rick Taman, is
natural environment, but the new
designation would recognize the
existing'residence and allow it to be
rebuilt if it were to burn down.
Two neighbors of the Tamans, Ed
Ranger and James Milroy, attended
the public meeting. Mr. Milroy was
assured by Huron County planner

While the Social Credit Party, of
Canada had -not held.a federal seat
since 1980, when all five members of
parliament from its Quebec wing
lost the election, it has retained
some political might in provincial
politics, most notably in British
Columbia where the Socreds' Bill
Vander Zaim is premier.
Mr. Lainson, however, disasso-
ciates the federal party with the B.C.
government saying his vision is
modelled after that of William
"Bible Bill" Aberhart, the evan-
gelist who swept to rule in Alberta
during the Depression starting a
Socred rule in that province that
lasted almost 40 years.
Aside from adapting government
policy to conform with Christian
principles, the Social Credit man-
date also includes the implementa-
tion of monetary reform based on a
system of money distribution in-
tended to increase people's pur-
chasing power within a free enter-
prise system.

CKNX-TV also will be broadcasting

weeknights after the evening movie,
as well as two new series, "Midnight
Caller" and "Friday the 13th".
All in all, Mr. Skelton says he
hopes viewers will enjoy the new
look of CKNX-TV. He feels the new
service is unique with something to
appeal to everyone in Midwestern
Ontario.
