Young Company presents
zany soap opera at Blyth
By Margaret Stapleton
Oh, what drama, what suspense,
what human angst in the Blyth
Young Company's production of
"Dinsley, The Soap, Not the Street",
which premiered last Friday
evening at the Dinsley Street
Garage in Blyth.
This Huron County soap opera
about the trials and tribulations of
the residents of the town of Dinsley
is the brainchild of Colleen Curran,
• writer of such Blyth Festival
•favorites as "Cake Walk" and
"Moose Cciunty".
"Dinsley, The Soap, Not the
Street" has been billed as a soap
opera for children and the young
members of the audience were
totally caught up in the story. But
this play has wide-ranging appeal
and was entertaining for the adults
as well.
The story revolves around iden-
tical twin sisters, Cathy and Kathy
(note: Cathy with a 'C' and Kathy
with a 'K') . Not too surprisingly, one
is evil and one is good.
City Cathy returns home to Din-
sley after many years with a scheme
to buy up rights to its mineral
springs for "the corporation".
However, she meets opposition to
her plan, not the least from Moby
Wheeler, whose family operates the
Farm. Credit
interest rates
are increased
Jim Hewitt, chairman of the Farm
Credit CorporatiOn, announced
recently that it has increased its
interest rates on all loans approved
after July 22 of this year.
The interest rate charged for five-
year, fixed interest term loans is
now 12.5 per cent; compared with the
previous rate of 12 per cent. Shared -
risk mortgage loans now will be
approved at 12.25 per ceig, up from
12.25 per cent.
The interest rate on Farm
Syndicate Loans is now is 12.5 per
cent as well, compared with the
previous rate of 12 per Cent.

A whole list of zany characters are
•introduced: Winona, the foundling
raised by wolves; Earl and Minerva,
the "artistes" Aurora 13 -Orel -its,
psychic masseuse; Spencer Day,
brain surgeon, anthropologist and
soldier -of -fortune turned lawyer;
Jonas Culver, diviner and Sister
Sophie Tuckersmith, evangelist.
In "The Home Coming", the
audience is introduced to the
characters and the general plot line.
"The Wedding" takes the story one
step further with an exciting twist at
the end. The action resumes Aug. 12
and 13 for the conclusion.
Director Ron Gabriel, a familiar
face on the Blyth Main stage, -has
taken his young charges and molded
their comedic talents. However,
with Ms. Curran's script, he has the
perfect vehicle.
The young people show an
amazing range of depth and feel for
timing. Becky Penn is suitably evil
as the nasty twin, Cathy, while
Wingham's Christa Crawford is
good as her sweet twin Kathy.
Ian Morton of Belgrave plays dual
roles of Moby Wheeler and Jonas
Culver and Joanne Olson, also of
Belgrave, is hilarious as the pyschic
masseuse, Aurora. Holly Horton and
Kris Chandler play the artistic
couple Earl and Minervao while
Rachel Thompson is their • barely -
tame houtegirl Winona.
Even John Rutledge of Blyth
makes a "cameo" appearance as.
Sister Sophie Tuckersmith at the
tapdancelilled wedding of Kathy
and Moby.
Other characters include: Jake
Chahners as Radii' and nal;* Lee -
aim Wainmes as,a tomato, a worm
and •"a stePdancing 'Wheeler catigin:
Sadie Rood as a tomato and a
Wheelet coashi; Steephanie tent0a
Miss tilynnis, secrL'at.:ry at the toin
clerk's office; Sarah thandler as the
architect Sebastian and Chris
Walker as Spencer Day.
The action shifts from one party(
the stage to another through subtle
lighthig changes. But this is"not dis-

other questions, return to the Din-
