The. Ontario lVlinistry. of Natural
Resources in co-operation with•.Essa
Ltd., a public opinion survey coml.,.
pany, is asking moose hunters = by
means of a mailed questionnaire --
for help in refinhig tile` moose liar-,
vest system.
Natural Resources Minister Vint
cent Kerrio says the survey' is im-
portant becalm it will indicate if the
.majority of hunters are in favor -of
things such as allowing party
hunting for adult moose.
The current selective harvest
system does not allow party hunting
for adult moose. At present, hunters
are required to enter. 3` draw to
obtain a validation tagta hunt a cow
or bull moose.
The survey -will also tellthe MNR
if hunters want the rules — for
hunting and applying for tag draws
- changed. The survey asks hunters
to comment on several points, in-
cluding:
—A return, to party hunting for
adult moose in 1988. If this change is
recommended, hunters could assist
each other in filling adult validation
tags.
—Developing a system to more
evenly distribute validation tags
among groups.
-Maintaining the preference pool
system in the draw which favors -
hunters who did not receive a
validation tag the previous year.
—Simplifying licence issuing•and
applying for tag draws byiinsuring.
permanent identification cards for
hunters. _
—Introducing a specific hunter
education program for first-time
moose hunters.
The ministry's background report
shows that many hunters miss going
into the field for adult .moose with
friends or family Members. They
mayfavor the change even though
the higher success rates resulting
from party •hunting may mean that
fewer adult validation tags are
available in a wildlife •management
unit the next year.
Mr. Kerrio said survey results will
be analyzed and any changes in the
