-HOWBERtRY HORSEMEN
Our -roll call was our mineral sen-
tence. After all old business was
covered, we discussed pasture and
what letting -your horses out to pas-
ture can,fio for -them. Then pasture
species were cl4Ssified into two
basic types: legunieS and grasses.
We- filled in eight blanks about the
major pasture plants in Ontario and
• discussed stage of growth of pasture
plants and percentages of three fibre
pastures.
- We learned the three management
practices. We read about when
pasture could be lacking and when it
isn't and how much pasture one
horse needs. We also talked about
hay. Time of harvest is very
important and how much hay a
horse needs per day. We learned a
hay -to -grain ratio and when each is
necessary for dai-ly diet. We
discussed what hay -bellies usually
result from and discussed silage and
sugarbeet pulp. •
We then judged tlifee of Ander-
son's geldings, to learn how to
actually judge something. Thanks to
the Andersons for the use of their
geldings and barn for our meeting.
