The Canadian Heart Foundation has produced a book with noted food writer and author Anne Lindsay and publisher Key Porter Books The Lighthearted Cook's 200 recipes include sections on ap- petizers, salads, breads, muffins and over 40 sumptuous desserts. Each delicious recipe is ac- companied by a nutritional analysis listing useful information, such as amount of fat, calories, cholesterol, protein, carbohydrates and sodium. "People are truly concerned about the effect of diets on health — especially our heart health," says Ms. Linsdsay. "I believe that ,the battle to reduce saturated fat, dietary cholesterol and salt will be won in the kitchen — without sacrificing delicious eating." The national project was developed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Dr. Anthony Graham, president of the foundation and chief of cardiology at Toronto's Wellesley Hospital, says, "Being overweight is a known risk factor for heart disease. Canadians currently consume 40 to 45 per cent of their calories in fat. This should be reduced to 30 per cent of daily in- take, coupled with moderation in salt intake and foods high in cholesterol." Dr. Graham noted that all recipes in The Lighthearted Cookbook conform to the Canadian Heart Foundation's nutrition guidelines, as well as the Canadian Diabetic Association's recommended food choices. Ms. Lindsay's practical "lifestyle" section considers the pitfalls on the road to a sound diet; the attraction of "convenient" foods and the less -than -ideal schedules with which most people cope when shopping and preparing meals. She offers recipes, accompanied by 1,Plpful tips on feeding a family on the r an; -on teaching children healthy eating habits, on eating out and on cooking for one. Ms. Lindsay is the author of the highly -successful Smart Cooking. Formerly a home economist at The Toronto Star, she is a food writer who contributes regularly to Canadian Living Food, Recipes Only and Verve magazines. "She has won Nabisco food writer awards for magazine writing. The Lighthearted Cookbook was made possible by a grant from the Becel Heart Health Information Bureau. The book is available from the Huron County Heart and Stroke Foundation for a nominal fee. Credit card purchases may be made by dialing 1-800-268-1121.
