Are patients not at risk if docto
or other health care workers a
infected with the AIDS virus?
Guel _Chg.
The caSebt-the doctoi-Who'died in
Guelph a short time ago, and who
had AIDS was somewhat sen-
sationalized by the media.
Infection control procedures
which protect doctors and other
health care workers in hospitals and
clinics, also protect patients. In
most hospital situations, there is
little opportunity for a patient to be
exposed to the blood of a doctor or
health care worker and, therefore,
there is very little risk. During in-
vasive procedures such as surgery
or kidney dialysis, precautions are
already in place to prevent
bloodborne infections such as
hepatitis B, and they would also
protect against the AIDS virus.

How much does it cost to take care
of an AIDS. patient in Canada? —
Mrs. J., Melfort, Sask.
Your letter and question arrived
just a little too soon. I am currently
working on an analysis of health
care costs for AIDS patients by
province, and will report the results
of my findings in a future column. I
can tell you, however, that direct
Medical costs for caring for AIDS
patients in the U.S. is between
$50,000 and $75,000 annually, and
over 50,000 people have been
diagnosed with AIDS — of which
more than half have died. It is
predicted .that by 1091 in the U.S.,
there will be 270,000 AIDS cases with
approximately -54,000 deaths per
year.
What are some of the diseases
affecting persons with AIDS?
Halifax, N.S.
In persons with AIDS (PWA),
Specific diseases have taken ad-
vantage of the opportunity
presented by the damaged immune
syStetn. These are frequently refer-'
red to as "opportunistic infections".
About 80 per cent of the AIDS cases
red have had one or both of two
rather rare diseases.
Tie first is called Pneumocystis
carinii pneumonia (PCP), which is a
parasitic infection of the lungs and
has symptoms similar to other
form.(pneumonia. This
pneumonia is found in over 50 per
cent of AIDS victims in Canada.
Shortness of breath, fever, and a
pattern of risk behaviors are Often
the syMptoMS, that first lead a
doctor to stispect AIDS in apatient.
The second disease is called
skin or---inter-nal--on:
surfaces (such as inside the mouth).
KS may first appear as a blue -violet
or brownish spot on the skin. The
spot or spots persist -and may grow
larger. As it progresses; it Can
spread to other tissues, such as the
lymph nodes, digestive tract and
lungs.
Other opportunistic infections in-,
clude tuberculosis, cytomegalo-
virus, herpes virus, and parasites
such as toxoplasmosis or
