F. E. Madill Secondary School
athletes enjoyed many successes
over the past year and to end the
1987-88 season, students were
honored at the annual athletic
banquet last Monday evening.
The theme of the banquet was
"The Hopes...The Dreams", em-
phasizing how some hopes were
dashed in defeat, yet others did
come true. Each team member
received a certificate with a team
picture, as well as two athletes from
each team were presented with
trophies.
The evening got on its way with an
excellent slide show, courtesy of Bob
Campbell, of the athletes in action.
The festivities concluded with the
presentation of the top five awards.
Jack Kopas honored Darryl
Button with the Madill Olympian
Award for his excellence in
basketball and curling. Bevin Flett,
last year's recipient, presented the
plaque.
The McKibbon Award, established
by the late Dr. W. A. McKibbon for a
male and female athlete displaying
effort and sportsmanship, was
presented to Steve Thynne and
Donna Raynard.
The top male and female trophies,
given to outstanding athletes in their
graduating year were won by Leah
Kulas and Craig Oatman.
Other awards were presented to:
Volleyball—Junior boys' most -
valuable player, Peter Strong, most -
improved player, Brent Kavanagh;
Senior boys' MVP, Oatman, MVP,
Jeff Murray; Junior girls' MVP,
Sharon Askes, MIP, Bonnie Strome;
Senior girls' best team player,
Kulas, MIP, Barb Huber;
SOCCER—Senior boys' MVP,
Jason DeJong, Oatman; Junior
boys' MVP, Mario Kostanis, Charles
Gulutzen;
BASKETBALL—Midget girls'
best -defensive player, Trisha

player, Charlotte Bouwers; Junior

coln Alexander a few tips on the proper method of pole vaulting. Mr.

The ABCD "above and beyond the
call of duty" award went to Colleen

Thomson and Jeff Mann.
The coaches appreciate the
support and encouragement the
parents have given throughout the
year. They also thank those who
provided transportation from
practices many nights a week. The
Madill athletic program is going
well due to this support.
Mite girils9.team
downs Winthrop
The Wingham 'A' Mite girls' team
played a fine team from Winthrop
last Wednesday evening at the
Optimist Park. The girls enjoyed
their first win of the season.
Strong run production, including
several timely • homeruns was
combined with excellent fielding to
produce the 29-8 victory.
The Winthrop pitching team is to
be congratulated on valiantly
playing through several minor in-
juries.
Thursday night
horseshoe play
Paul McKee and Syd Lawson took
top spot in last Thursday evening's
horseshoe play at the Wingham
Sportsmen's Club with an im-
pressive seven wins.
In second place were Jack Higgins
and Ivan Rivett, five wins and a plus
of 47, while Ivan Gardner and Jerry
Edwards were third with five wins
and a plus of 39.
Leon Russell and Don Saunders
were fourth with four wins and a
plus of 37. Bob Gavreluk and Glen
Casemore were fifth at three wins
and a plus of 82, while Glen Sellers
and Lorne Kuntz were sixth with two
wins and a plus of 92.
Bill Tiffin and Elmer McFarlan
were seventh with two wins and a
plus of 72 and rounding out the
scoring in eighth place were Lorne
Hamilton and Jack Fritzley with no
wins and a plus of 94.

McKIBBON TROPHY — Steve Thynne, a Grade 13 student at F. E.
Madill Secondary School in Wingham, is this year's recipient of the
boys' McKibbon Trophy, recognizing effort and sportsmanship.
Teacher Bob Campbell made the presentation at the athletic ban-
quet.
TOP MALE ATHLETE — Craig Oatman was presented with the
award for top male athlete 1987-88 at the F. E. Madill Secondary
School by Principal Ken Wood at the athletic banquet.

TO LIVE NEAR JAMESTOWN
At high noon on Wednesday,
March 27, 1918, at the home of the
bride's parents, H. A. and Mrs.
McCall, Bluevale, Rev. D. D.
Thomson tied the nuptial bow bet-
ween Miss Lillian McCall and
William C. King of Jamestown. Mr.
and Mrs. King left on the 3:17/train
for Stratford, London, Delhi;
Hamilton and other points. They
were intending to take up residence
on the groom's fine farm on the
Brussels grael road near
Jamestown.
