Unless- you work in a 1 pediatric ward of a hospital — in which case you would be y knowledgeable about proper hygienic procedures in caring . for 1 children — you have nothing to be concerned about. r The majority of children who have { AIDS or are AIDS virus carriers acquired the disease from their infected mothers before birth. Some children . contracted AIDS from the transfusion of infected blood or blood products before blood donations were carefully screened. Pediatric AIDS, however, remains rare in Canada. As of Feb. 22, 1988, there have been 26 cases of children (under 15 years of age) diagnosed with AIDS in Canada, of whom 19 have died. In the United States as of Feb. 18, 1988, there have been 839 recorded cases of children with AIDS (under 13 years of age). My son recently required a blood transfusion when he was vacationing in Europe. How can I be sure the blood he received did not have the AIDS virus? –a. W.C., Vancouver, B.C. The likelihood of your son receiving blood that was con- taminated with the AIDS virus is very remote. However, you should know that blood donations are only screened against the AIDS virus in North America, Australia, Western Europe and Japan. If it would. ease your mind, you might consider having his blood tested. I suggest you consult with your doctor.
