guest speaker, June Taylor, general'

spoke on wife abuse and said that at
most times there are 13 to 15 women
*taking refuge at the house; many of
them with their children.

expenses are subsidized up to 80 per
cent by the government. The

A meeting of. 12 interested citizens
of the • Belgrave community took
place last week at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. George Michie. The
discussion centred around. the need
for senior citizens' housing in the
hamlet. It was decided to hold a
public meeting in the near future.
Dr. Ray and Mrs. Nicholson of
Williamsburg visited with their
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garner
Nicholson and Mr. an Mrs. Wilson
Thornton recently.

BLUEVALE--A pot -luck supper
was held last Monday, May 30, to
conclude the 19,87-88 Bluevale Senior
Citizens' season. A total of 40 people
were in attendance..

at St: Andrew's Presbyterian
e Church. Following refreshments,

Linda Pettigrew, leader,
welcomed the ladies with a
, meditation and introduced the
special guestsor the evening, Mrs.
Sharon ,Wideman and Mrs. Joyce

• Church, who ministered to the group
in word and song on overcoming
grief. Mrs. Wideman's 15 -year-old
son and Mrs. Freeman's nephew,
along with two other teenagers,
were killed in 1984 by a drunk driver
in a hayride accident. Mrs.
Wideman told of how she has
attempted to bring something good
out of T. Scott's death and the
resulting sorrow, by speaking at
area high schools to warn teenagers
of the, dangers of drinking and
driving, by forming a PRIDE
chapter at Kitchener and by raising
money for the Youth Memorial Fund
set up in memory of the hayride
accident victims. A source of contri-
butions to this fund is.realized
through selling hash notes which
feature scenic photos taken by her
son.
- . Auburn served a -salad dinner. to
about 60 people: Greetings; were
brought from the Area, fronllluron
East and Huron South. Crafts were
sold to the amount of $50 and the
collection for the day was $71.51. The
presidents of the branches gave
their highlights of the year and a
memorial service was conducted by
St. Helens.
The speaker was Dr. Maarten
Bokhout of Goderich, Medical
Officer of Health. His topic was
"Changing of the Times". Goderich
Township branch showed flags of
different countries and Tiger Dunlop
branch favored the group with. two
songs,, ``One Day at a Time" and
"Let There Be . Peace" by Helen
Williams, with Adelaide 'eagan at
the piano. Mrs. Les Jacklin gave the
public relations report ; the
curator's report was given by Mrs.
William Porter and Mrs. Edith
Cooper gave the program report.
The officers are: . president, Mrs.
Margaret Taylor, Londesborough;
first vice-president, Mrs. Jaynes
Winter, Belgrave; second vice-
president, Mrs. Bert McCreath,
Goderich; secretary -treasurer, Mrs.
Clare Van Camp, Belgrave; public
relations officer, Mrs. Les Jacklin,
Winghatn; curator, Mrs. William
Porter, Goderieb; District delegate,
Mrs. Taylor.
Courtesies were given by Mrs,
Porter. The Tiger Dunlop branch
invited all to the 89th annual meeting

Interspersed throughout the mes-
sage, the ladies sang and read
beautiful poems written by friends
of the deceased young people. Verna
Brown thanked the guests. The
offering was received by Shirley
Norman and Joyce Bain, after which
Audrey McKague led in prayer.
White beans were featured at the
interesting cooking demonstration
which followed, prepared by Shirley
McKague and Leslie Martin. Foods
using white beans include muffins,
salad, pie and baked beans. Samples
of these foods were enjoyed by all
present, bringing the evening to a
pleasant conclusion.
