Saka narrowly missed the OFSSA rec of 43.42m and beat her near competitor by over six metres. The performance earned Saka her second OFSSA gold medal three years. (She won the gold a Midget in 1985.) The same day, Sharon Askes lea ed 4.98m in the Midget girls' 1 jump to earn eighth place overall. In the Junior boys' pole vau Mike Cardy experienced misf tune. Planning to -start jumping 3.50m, he discovered officials erred on the height of the crossb and 3.50m was actually 3.65m. T error proved costly when he w unable to clear his starting height 3.65m in three attempts. On the second day of competitio Sakasov earned sixth place in t Junior girls' shot put with a throw 10.89m. However, the surprise of da came when Askes, competing in t Midget girls' triple jump, leape 10.52m early in the competition trail the leader by seve centimetres. In her fourth jump, she increase her leap to 10.50m to take over th lead. Askes set the new OFSSA tripl jump record and earned the OFSS gold medal. While Askes was busy in the tripl jump pit, Craig King was throwing the discus in the Midget boys' event. Again spectators applauded some fine throws by this young athlete as he took the early lead with a throw of 49m. He bettered that lead later in the competition with a personal best of 51.44m and a new school record. In the very final throw of the com- petition, a thrower from Michael Power High School in Toronto sur- passed King's throw and he settled for a well-earned OFSSA silver medal. While the triple jump and discus events were taking place, Bevin Flett was competing in the Senior boys' pole vault. He entered the competition at 3.95m, successfully clearing that height. He then passed 4.15m. At 4.25m, a height equalling his personal best, he was unable to clear the bar. Flett earned fifth place in the competition. The all -Ontario comptition officially marked the endof the high school track and field season for 1988. Phone 357-1286 or 357-1938. Poulin shines as Bantams down Goderich team 2-1 Peter Poulin put on a stellar e performance to lead the Wingham Bantam boys to a 2-1 win over Goderich last week. Poulin pitched a two -hitter, striking out 12 while walking only two. He also drove in Tim Currie with the winning run with two out in the final inning. Poulin, who also singled in the first inning, did not allow a Goderich Soccer team loses 3-0 game to Goderich team The Wingham PeeWee soccer team, the "Pegasus" played its first official match last Tuesday at Goderich, losing 3-0 to the host team. The next game is tonight, Tuesday, at 7 p.m. against Port Elgin. The game will be played on the soccer field at the F. E. Madill Secondary School. Visitors are welcome to come out and support th.V3.51)AMMATMItielf o Thursday night horseshoe play Don Saunders and Harold Carter were first with five wins in last Thursday night's horseshoe play at the Wingham Sportsmen's Club. Leon Russell and Andy Adams were second with three wins and a plus of 54, while Ivan Gardner _and Ehner McFarlan were third, two wins and a plus of 97, in fourth place were Robert Thompson and Keith Moffatt, two wins and a plus of 80, while Glen Casemore and Lorne Hamilton were fifth with two wins and a plus of 62. Mason Robinson and Syd Lawson were sixth with one win and a plus of 106. The Sportsmen's Club is hosting a horseshoe tournament this Sat- urday, June 11, at kp.m. 0-0-0 Isn't is strange how often small ANIMPA4M44 base runner after the second inning. Collecting the other Wingham hits were Rob Harrison and Kevin Beldman. The team's next home game is this Thursday against Atwood. BRUCE'S NOTES — Poulin defi- nitely looked sharp in this one, handing archrival Goderich its first loss of the season. The local bats continue to struggle some, as the team was left with 11 runners on base. Only 32,000 miles, The Wingham 1 Mite girls' team opened its softball season on May 25, hosting Blyth. The Wingham girls led through the first three innings, but fell behind after a strong Blyth fourth inning. Seven runs scored in the bottom of the sixth inning were not enough to narrow the gab and Blyth went on to win the game 25-20. Last Wednesday, Wingham traveled to Walton. Playing in cold and windy weather, the Wingharn girls produced some good hits. Walton showed excellent fielding skills and had several strong run - producing innings as well. However, in the end, Wingham lost 14-9. The next scheduled game is June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Optimist Park.
