On the first day of competit
Anna Sakasov dazzled the c
petitors and spectators in the Ju
girls' discus by hurling
implement 42.34 metres. Saka
narrowly missed the OFSSA rec
of 43.42m and beat her near
competitor by over six metres.
The performance earned Saka
her second OFSSA gold medal
three years. (She won the gold a
Midget in 1985.)
The same day, Sharon Askes lea
ed 4.98m in the Midget girls' 1
jump to earn eighth place overall.
In the Junior boys' pole vau
Mike Cardy experienced misf
tune. Planning to -start jumping
3.50m, he discovered officials
erred on the height of the crossb
and 3.50m was actually 3.65m. T
error proved costly when he w
unable to clear his starting height
3.65m in three attempts.
On the second day of competitio
Sakasov earned sixth place in t
Junior girls' shot put with a throw
10.89m.
However, the surprise of da
came when Askes, competing in t
Midget girls' triple jump, leape
10.52m early in the competition
trail the leader by seve
centimetres.
In her fourth jump, she increase
her leap to 10.50m to take over th
lead. Askes set the new OFSSA tripl
jump record and earned the OFSS
gold medal.
While Askes was busy in the tripl
jump pit, Craig King was throwing
the discus in the Midget boys' event.
Again spectators applauded some
fine throws by this young athlete as
he took the early lead with a throw of
49m.
He bettered that lead later in the
competition with a personal best of
51.44m and a new school record. In
the very final throw of the com-
petition, a thrower from Michael
Power High School in Toronto sur-
passed King's throw and he settled
for a well-earned OFSSA silver
medal.
While the triple jump and discus
events were taking place, Bevin
Flett was competing in the Senior
boys' pole vault. He entered the
competition at 3.95m, successfully
clearing that height. He then passed
4.15m.
At 4.25m, a height equalling his
personal best, he was unable to clear
the bar. Flett earned fifth place in
the competition.
The all -Ontario comptition
officially marked the endof the high
school track and field season for
1988. Congratulations are extended
to Madill athletes for their fine
season in which they captured
several championships and
achieved the best overall perform-
ances at OFSSA ever accomplished
by students from the school.

opened its softball season on May 25,
hosting Blyth.
The Wingham girls led through the
first three innings, but fell behind
after a strong Blyth fourth inning.
Seven runs scored in the bottom of
the sixth inning were not enough to
narrow the gab and Blyth went on to
win the game 25-20.
Last Wednesday, Wingham
traveled to Walton. Playing in cold
and windy weather, the Wingharn
girls produced some good hits.
Walton showed excellent fielding
skills and had several strong run -

in the end, Wingham lost 14-9.
