• Athletes from the Wingham
Optimist Track and Field Club.
competed last Saturday in the
Saugeen Elementary Classic at Port
Elgin. Over 500 young athletes from
Western Ontario gathered for the
competition held on a weather -
perfect day.
Wingham athletes set six new.
meet records and earned '65 gold,
silver and bronze medals. At this
meet, athletes attempted to achieve
standards and,. depending on their
performances, some earned bronze,
silver or gold awards.
Shawn Gedeke led the Atom boys'
team, setting two new meet records
and earning a gold and three silver
medals. Early in the day he leaped
4.33 metres, a personal best, to win
'the Atom boys' long jump an, d
shatter the former meet record' of
3.96m •
He also ran a fine performance in
the 400m at a time of 1:09.5 minutes,
earning a gold and' breaking the
former meet record of 1:21.1 min.
Teammate Peter Shaw won a old in
Baeshot t -and-Jamie _ g
.larnre MacKay won
a silver in the 800m, both personal
bests.
The Atom boys' sprint. relay team
of Gedcke, ,Shaw, MacKay and Eric
Deyell prated-'-second-to earn . the
Julie Lisle set a n w record in. the
Atom girls' long jump, leaping an
astonishing 4.10m° to- win the gold,
and shatter the former record of
3.85m. She also was first in the Atoin
girls' high jump, 1.30m and firstr in
the shot put, 7.68m, to win/ggold
medals (both personal bests ).
Teammate Ibukuir Oriole ran a
strong loam rice at 14.9. seconds :to
win the silver and was fiord in the, -

The Tyke girls' sprint relay team
of Lisle, Melissa Evers, Lesley Pike
and Mandy Anger set a new record
and earned a gold.
In Tyke boys' competition, Devin
Chaulk tan 0 Strong 200th in.35.1 sec.
to place second and earns, silver.. He
ran the 100m . in 17 sec., placing
fourth and earning a silver.
Teammate 'Adam Knight ran a
strong lOOm in. 16.6 sec. to place third
and earn a silver. In the 200m, he
was third in 36.1. sec • to earn.a

In,!the Mite girls', Janet Lisle ran a
strong 100m in 18.2sec., placing
second to win the silver. She also ran
the 200m in 39.3 sec., placing third
and winning a gold. Both were
personal�bests.
Teammate Christa Pegg also put
in fine performances. She ran the
400m in 1:32.0 sec., to place second
and was third in the long jump at
2.48m. Pegg also was first in the ball
throw, 17.7m, all personal bests.
