The- Ontario Plowmen's Associa-
tion has named Fred Lewis OPA
President for 1988. Albert Carson,.
who served as president in 1987,
stepped down in February to allow
• Mr. Lewis to assume the senior posi
tion inthe organization. First on Mr.
Lewis's list of responsibilities is the
International Plowing Match and
Farm Machinery. Show, which will
take place September 20-24 near
Stratford; Perth County, •
Fred Lewis, a cash crop, beef and
broiler chicken producer from
Middlesex County has been an OPA
member since 1978. Mr. Lewis
served as vice-president of the OPA
last year. •

The Teeswater -Town Halt, was
filled to capacity last.:Friday
evening, May 27, for the . annual
stepdancing recital featuring the
pupils of Janice:Ballagh. A: total of 63
dancers took part in the: show.
Heidi Whytock, a 'first-year
student,
first-year-
student,,performed a solo routine.
Amanda ' and Sarah Raper, second-
year students, performed a reel as a
duet.
Those performing trios were:

of five .dancers: Lori Bridge,

Megan Nunn, Jennifer Petteptace,
Kara Neil, Mari -Beth • Nunn and
Het Scrimgeour: The second group
of danders were third at Paddyfest.

on saxophone, son Shawn on the
piano and Craig, a dance student,
stepping out a good old-fashioned
reel to "Whalen's Breakdown".
Grant and Paula Rutherford also
favored the crowd with their
bagpipe music and Highland clan:
cing.
The McMichael Sisters ended the
program with a snappy reel. The
music was supplied all night by Scott
and . Carolyn Woods of Fergus and
Ethel McMichael, Wroxeter.
Mr. Woods also performed a
couple of fiddle favorites to start the
show off on the right foot.
Master of ceremonies for the
evening was Johnny Brent, who
managed to keep the show -'rolling
while entertaining and joking with
the youngsters at the same time.
The 63 students performed in the
grand -finale which also called the
1987-88 stepdanci,g season to a
close.
Proceeds froth the - show will be
donated to th9'Mthritis Society and
the Heart andStroke Foundation.

The number of self-employed
Canadians has increased quite
rapidly during the first half of the
1980s. Results from the 1986 Census
of Population'show that while the
number :e paid workers increased
by seven. , '. cent between 1981 and
1986, the number of self-employed
persons increased by 10 per cent.
There were also important dif-
ferences between the sexes. In 1986,
self-employed males were still three
times more numerous than females.
However, the number of self-
ernployed males increased . by only
seven per cent since 1 r r 1, while the
