TORNADO TOUCHES DOWN
NEAR BELGRAVE
A small tornado swept out of the
sky south of Belgrave last Monday,
May 16, at 12:35 p.m., touching down
briefly in a field directly behind the
East Wawanosh Public School.
° Many students witnessed the
twister before rushing to shelter
within the school. Initially, the
students thought the whitish -grey
colored funnel was exhaust from a
jet° However, it was floating like a
long kite tail and was rotating as
well.
The students took refuge in the
hallways away from the windows
and doors.
The tornado suddenly touched
down and a plowed field was turned
into a dust bowl as dirt spiralled into
the air. In a matter of seconds it had
headed northeast toward Wingham.
Immediately following the, sighting,
hail poured down from the sky° Mr.
Harrison's Grade 7-8 science class
retrieved several specimens
measuring three centimetres, or one
and one-quarter inches, in diameter.
It was reported that a: roadgrader
was used to clear the road of ac-
cumulated hailstones on the Ninth
Concession of East Wawanosh near
Bruce Campbell's farm°
The tornado certainly created a
variety of feelings among the staff
and students — from excitement to
anxiety and fear. We were fortunate
that no serious damage or injuries
resulted.
Students and parents received
calls from as far away as Edmonton,
Toronto, London, Windsor,
Hamilton, Barrie and Kitchener to
name just a few. Many radio and
television stations, as well as
newspapers inundated the school
with calls. We even made CBC news
last Wednesday, May 18.
On a lighter note, one young
Kindergarten student asked a
teacher,'"Did you see the tomato?"

Kindergarten and Grade 1
On Tuesday, May 10, the Kinder-
garten and Grade 1 students went to
the East Wawanosh Conservation
Area. Even though it rained, they
enjoyed walking through the woods.
They saw a lot of spring flowers.
They , made bird nests with their
fingers taped. It is sure hard to be a
bird.

Grade 6-7 — Pioneer Study
The entire student body and staff
recently participated in a major
pioneer unit at the East Wawanosh
Public School.
During the morning on the first
day, the students were entertained
by the Clinton Wheel and Dealers, a
group of square dancers from the
surrounding area. The students
were divided into teams and
throughout the morning they rotated
to the following presentations; and
demonstrations.
Sam Pletch of Be rave brought a
horse to the school and John
McClinchey*prepared the front
hooves and put on a new pair of
shoes.
Tony McQuail sheared a sheep,
while Louise Bosman talked about
the old one -room school. Mr° and
Mrs° Smith of Monkton brught in a
large number of pioneer tools and
demonstrated their many uses.
The children also watched a series
of films on a variety of pioneer
topics.
On the second day, the students
took part in five different electives.
The staff and several guests put on a
number of activities. They chose
from the following — Cemetery
study, model building, stitchery, doll
making, spinning, butter making,
rug making, writing, quilting,
pioneer toys, wea ng, parlor games
and pomander pr`ng.

Special thanks go out to Mrs.
Hallan, Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Penn,
Mrs. Simons and Mr° Wilkins, who
all took time from the busy
schedules to help with the activities.
Parent volunteers Sharon. Darlow,
Jean McBurney, Karen McCallum
and Eve Buchanan also proved
invaluable.
On the last day of our pioneer unit
electivies, we had an old-fashioned
picnic with all the trimmings. In the
afternoon, we learned and played
pioneer games.
This major unit proved to be a
tremendous success due to excellent
planning and the many volunteers
who spent countless hours. The
student body found the experience
educational and extremely in-
teresting. The students will long
remember this week — a major
study of their ancestors and a tor-
nado in their backyard. Ouite a
week!
