E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham had their best showing in history, winning six gold medals; eight silver and two bronze. In additionthey set three new WOSSA records, broke 10 school records, won the Junior boys' team championship and the Junior boys' individual championship. Madill athletes have qualified to compete in 17 events at the OFSAA regionals at Centennial Stadium in Kitchener this Friday and Saturday. The Midget girls' relay team of Jodi Hackett, Darlene Kikkert,,Amy Jo Long and Askes set 'a new sciool record of 54 sec. to take fourth place. Joan Kikkert alto was fourth in the Senior girls' shot put, 9.37m and fifth in the discus. WEng:hain:: Bantams•spIit first two league games Last Tuesday evening the Wingham Bantam boys travelled to Monkton : to . start the Tri -County season. The local boys were a little rusty as they managed only four hits, losing 4-3. Tim Currie pitched a strong game for Wingham, allowing only four hits while going the distance. Rob Harrison led the offence by doubling and driving in two hits. Others hits carne off the bats of Steve Bourne, Dave McKee and Currie. Last Thursday night, Wingham played Walton in their home opener. Wingham prevailed 9-7 in a seesaw battle in which the lead changed .. hits apiece. Mario Kotsanis tripled, driving in three runs, while Kevin Beldman collected the other Wingham hit. BRUCE'S NOTES ® The Wingham boys will 'be .playing against some tougher competition this year after going through the 1987 season undefeated in PeeWee9 The local team supports 14 first-year Bantam players. It was good to see the bats come to life against Walton after losing a tough opener to Monkton. Pitchers Currie and Poulin look very strong for the season. -hands four.timese .._.. Peter Poulin was the winning pitcher for Wingham, going the distance and allowing only five hits while striking out nine. Poulin also tripled and drove in the two deciding runs. Currie had a perfect night at the plate, going two for two and scoring twice. Other offensive stars were Rob MacKay and McKee ,with two NEW DOGINTOWN= In summer of 1891, it was reported that A. fir. Midford had just returned to Wingham from Cuba, bringing with him a Russian bloodhound. He was a powerful- animal, yet gentle and quiet. He was a great watchdog, though, and had served well down among the natives of the island. He was the terror of the Wingham canines.
