IOW CANA DI A N MENTA I, HEAfl'il .414.1k. ASSOC 'I ATV A "I don't know whether family stress or the demands of his music career, or 6ornethitig totally unrelated started David's problems. What I do know is that he is a very troubled young man. I've been his manager since he began. giving concerts as a teenager. I've seen his highs and his lows. AndI've, seen mallytimes. When his piano seemed to . be the only thing that sustained him. David gets lots of professional help, and takes medication when he needs it for his depression. But he's told me • many times that he could never make it through life without the support of his friends and the people in the classical music industry. He'll probably still feel shaky from time to time, but if we all continue to be there when he needs us I'm sure hell make it. David has a lot to contribute. I guess the lesson is that even concert pianists can have mental health problems." People like David are getting back on theirfeet rnorefrequently these • days.. .partly because treatment of mental health problems has improved drarhatically, and partly because the rest of society is learning to be more understanding and supportive.
