Emergency department patients
appear to be pleased with the ser-
vice provided at the Wingham and
District Hospital according to the
findings of an Ontario Hospital
Association survey conducted in
1987.
In the study, emergency room pa-
tients at 16 hospitals in the OHA's
Region 2, which includes Wingham,
were asked to respond to questions
about: use of emergency depart
ments, including frequency, time
and reason for use; perceptions of
emergency 'departments, including
a rating of the :overall experience;
and .ways.. in:, which . _they _:feel
emergency .departments couldbe
improved. •
In a comparison of key findings in
the survey, -98 per cent of Wingham's.
patients 'rated- the hospitaI's
emergency department as good or

Turnberry gives

Turnberry council has made a
donation to the Wingham Library
building fund.
The donation was made at the
second monthly, meeting of council
and is in the amount of $2,000. The
grand opening of .the Wingham
branch library is.. scheduled for May
14.at 2:30 p.m.

The survey shows that the
Wingham hospital experiences a
somewhat higher percentage of
patients than the survey average
during the period between 9 a.m.
and 5 p.m. (63 per cent) and inthe
early morning hours from midnight
to 9 a.m. (10 .per cent). The,period
between 5 pom and midnight is lower
(27 per cent). Most physicians in the
Wingham hospital area have af-
ternoon and evening office hours
which may account for the dif-
ference. _ ...__......_._ .. .
The survey report ;indicates that
overall, the . participating emergen-
cy departmentsreceive57,5 per cent
of their patients between 9 a.m,
and 5 p.m., 35.2 per cent between
5 p.m. and midnight and 7.2 per cent
between midnight and 9 a.m. The
survey; also concludes • that 60 per
cent .of these patients, make no at-
tempt to contact a physician before
going to the hospital.
For the most part, -any negative

for a patient 'to be seen by a
_physician. The 11 ' per cent . making
the comments were in .the 5 p.m. to
midnight and rinidnigbt to .9 a.m.

Of the others surveyed, c.per cent
found the waiting time acceptable
and 20 per, cent even felt it was
shorter than they expected.
The hospital also points out the
OHA survey data can be somewhat

members, of the Wingham and Area
Fire Department.:
, Chief Harley Gaunt said- the
department received a:call to a barn
fire at the farm of Alvin Grainger,
Lot 2, Con. 4 of Howick Township on
April 20 at approximately 5:30 p.m,
A short in a . cable going to a silo
unloader is the suspected cause of
the blaze, which resulted in $5,000
damage, according to Mr. Gaunt.
Firefightett `forked hay from the barn in an effort to contain the fire,
width 'they managed to do and then
reriained on the scene until after
idnight to ensure the fire had been
guished.

correspondent, adds that-, the Grain-
gers were able to get their 90 head of
cattle out of the barn` The animals
were taken to a barn on the
neighboring Murray Powell farn'.

Optimist fishing
derby is on for
this weekend
It appears that the Wingham
Optimists,' fishing derby will be held
this year after all.
At press time Monday, Optimist.
:spokesman Eleanor Saxton told The
Advance -Times the derby will be
held this. Saturday and Sunday at
Iowson's Dam,
