1.1116 a just -released government
study of all railway branch lines in
midwestern Ontario; - . •
Since its release; Project BOO
has identified several areas where
costs can be reduced to -turther,
improve the scheme's viability and
profitability.
The nine-month study conducted
by the Peat Marwick consulting
group was commissioned by the
Ontario Ministry of Transportation
and Transport Canada and was
initiated at the request of Project
ReRail, .a public interest group
based in Owen Sound.
Both Canadian Pacific and Can-
adian National want, within the next
few years, to abandon their branch
lines in the study area which is
bounded by Mississauga, London,
Lake puron, and Owen Sound in the
north.
Peter Bowers, Project ReRail's
project co-ordinator, said the
$130,000 study has proven the
group's contention that a regional
railway has its place in the region's
transportation infrastructure and
that it has the potential to operate
profitably.

"Our new rail company, which
will be known as Ontario Mid-

region's shippers a personal, safe
and reliable_ service at -competitive
rates," Mr, Rawerssaid. "Our
service will be tailored to the
• customers' needs, something that
big railroads no longer offer on these
or other branch lines."
The proposed Ontario Midwestern
Rail Services will streamline the
present 627 miles of CN and CP- rail
lines in- the study area into a com-
• pact, efficient system of 290 to 350
miles serving the needs of more than
100 communities in nine counties
and regional municipalities.
Project ReRail is currently
placing the new railway's
management team and will soon
have its business plan completed for
presentation to government and
potential investors.

In an article last week reporting
an offer to purchase a portion of the
Wingham Cenotaph property, the
location was incorrectly identified
as being 50 feet deep with a frontage
of 10.75 feet on Diagonal Road.
Instead the property in question
has an irregular shape and fronts on
John Street East.
We regret any confusion resulting
from this misinformation.

will be up for abandonment.
