Men whose wives have died are at
.an increased risk for mental and
physical health problems. One
.program which may have a
significant positive impact on
widowers' experiences is a study
beginning in May and conducted
through Sunnybrook Medical Centre
in Toronto.
This coinmunity project is run by
Dr. Fred Tudiver and Dr. John
Hilditch of the department of family
and community medicine at Sun-
nybrook. They will be' assisted by
LIFT, a division of Humphrey
Funeral Home: A. W. Miles Chapel.
The program will examine the
impact on widowers participating in
self-help groups. The objectives are
to reduce risks associated with
bereavement, to increase self-care
and to facilitate the grieving,process
through mutual support of fellow
widowers. The project is funded by
Health and Welfare Canada.
Focusing on task development,
this all-male program offers in-
teresting activities and discussions
on household and financial
management, nutrition, socializing
and changes for the future.
The stress produced by4widewers'
isolation or reluctance to seek social
support, combined with the
emotional upheaval of grief, will be
eased by the new program.
Widowers of any age whose wives
have died within the past nine
months are invited to participate in
this free program,. 4 yew have
recently been widowed, or if you
know someone else who has, please.
