The quality of a community can be related directly to.,
particular segment of, Its population who unselfishly
devote their time and energy so that others may benefit.
Often, simply the' satisfaction of knowing their con-
tribution has helped to make the quality of. life within the
community even the slightest bit better is enough reward
for these people. Perhaps, too, it is the grateful smile of a
person who has been directly helped which isihe:oniy com-
pensation.
Far too"seldom are these individuals—described best as
having. a "heart of gold" given the public recognition
which they truly deserve. Mostly, of course, this sterns
from the very nature of .the motivation which spurs these
wonderful people to go about their' special duties.
seemingly without tiring, uncomplaining and in relative
anonymity.
They are everywhere in our community: the minor
hockey coach who starts his weekday mornings in a.cold
hockey rink, the lady downthe street whose tireless efforts.
have resulted in successfut campaigns for a number of
charities, neighbors who are dedicated leaders of ` our
° youth groups Even when their unselfishness is pointed out
to them, these people will often suggest their contributions
are insignificant in comparison to the work of others the y
know.
However, Air Canada in partnership

ask you to come forth and nominate that special someone
in your neighborhood, club, church or organization who
consistently gives that -extra time and effort to the corn
munity and its residents. The nominations are for the Ai

nomination forms have appeared in thi
newspaper.. In addition, forms a,isa: can be obtained b
writing to Air Canada's Heart of Gold Award, care of thi
and .other, community newspapers.. Nominations Will b
accepted for a period of four months starting immediately
All the nominator has to do is fill in the form and leave
at our office or mail it to the Canadian Community News
papers Association, Suite .705, 88 University Avenue
Toronto, Ontario, M5J 1T6. It's that simple!
Nominees will receive an award certificate recognizing
their contribution and in many instances, will be featured
in news stories. They will also be considered for provincial
or national recognition by a panel of community news-
paper editors and publishers.
Certainly there are others in the area who feel as we do
that this community has several such Heart_of Gold Award
candidates. The next step is to pick up the nomination form
and write in that person's name.
It's a great way for us to thank these people. Even,
perhaps, the only way, but such an easy one.
