This rousing game was played on Shuter Street. • Legion PeeWees drop final game at oderich The Wingham Legion PeeWees ended. the 1987-88 season on a losing last Saturday by dropping a 7-1 verdict to Mitchell in the consolation final at the Goderich Lions Young Canada Week Tournament. Earlier in the day, the team ad- vanced to the finals by nipping Palmerston 7-6 in overtime. In the consolation final, Mitchell's Mike Hodgert was a dominant force as he scored four goals and added two assists to lead his team to vic- tory. Wingham's lone goal came e first period when Duane Patterbun, up from the PeeWee 'B' team, scored with help from Gord Welch. The score was tied at 1-1 after one' frame, but Mitchell led 4-1 after two and fired three unanswered goals home in the final frame. _ Andrew Gibson played goal for Wingham in periods one and two and Rob Johnston took over in the third. In game ' one last Saturday, Wingham led Palmerston 4-1 after two frames, (but found they were behind 6-4 with only eight minutes remaining in regulation time. But Brad Robinson's second goal of the game cut the lead to 6-5 and with only 17 seconds remaining and goalie Gibson on the bench for an extra attacker, Patterson scored the tying goal. This marker sent the game into a sudden -victory period and with only two minutes gone in the period, Jeff Olson cut across the Palmerston blueline and drilled a low shot through the legs of the Palmerston goalie. Jonathon Lane and Matt Hunter assisted on the winning goal, Other goal scorers were Captain Ryan Deyell with two and a single marker went to Bryce Taylor. In the assists' department, Welch and Taylor had two, with singles going to • Deyell, Olson, Patterson and defenceman Shane Pegg. r Gibson played brilliantly in net for Wingham, especially in the final frame which *as tolaW dominated by Palmerston. The Legion PeeWees took only 22 minutes in 'penalties in four games during the tourney. Each player received a crest in honor of this accomplishment. It is the third time since 1984 the Wingham Legion PeeWees have won the award. The concludes the season for the team. The coaches and players thank the Wingham Legion for its sponsorship again this year. The boys played 52 games, winning 16, losing 32 and tying four. With 10 returning players, the team is looking ahead to next season. Atoms win one and lose at Listowel tournament Last Monday the Wingham Super X Atoms downed St. Marys 5-0, but then lost a 2-1 squeaker to Listowel to be eliminated from that town's tournament. Jamie MacKay led the way for Wingham in the St. Marys game, netting the hat trick. Shaun Walker and Peter Gusso added single markers, Chris Patterson chalked up assists on the Walker and Gusso goals, while Patrick Magee also picked up an assist on Walker's marker. All the scoring was done in the first period as Wingham controlled the play, Chad Davis played a steady game in net to record the shutout. Listowel VVhites 2, Wingham 1 After losing out to Listowel in the WOAA group playoff final series, Wingham was determined to turn the tables in this tournament game. Listowel opened the scoring before the game was a minute old, but Wingham fought back to tie it at the end of the first when Bryan deStuyn slapped one in from Gusso. With three minutes left in the second period, Steve Smith scored his second, which turned out to be the winning goal. Wingham continued to press throughout the third period and as several Listowel fans admitted to the Wingham coach,- the Super X team deserved a better fate as it outplayed Listowel, but just could not finish off around the net. Wingham 6, Belgrave 5 In an exhibition match last Friday, Wingham sneaked past Belgrave 6-5. Gusso racked up a hat trick and added an assist for a four -point night. Joel Pegg dented the twine twice and also added an assist on Walker's goal. For Belgrave, Mark Olson led the way with four goals and an assist. Brent Robinson- fired the other Belgrave goal and also picked up an assist. Doug Wilson chipped in with an assist on Robinson's goal. Belgrave had built a 3-1 lead, but Wingham came back to tie it at the end of the first period. Wingham added two more in the second, but then allowed Belgrave to get right back into it as they scored two hi one minute. With the score tied at five, Gusso set up Pegg, who netted the winner with three minutes left in the game. Thirteen tables play at Bluevale BLUEVALE—The village senior citizens held an open euchre party March 14 with 13 -tables in play. The following won prizes: high lady, Agnes Bieman; high man, Alex MacTavish; low lady, Frances Shaw; low man, Bill Mills; ladies' draw, Shirley Nicholson; men's draw, Vera Moffatt, playing as a man. After the prizes were presented, a buffet luncheon was served by the hosts, Hugh and Elaine Mundell, Ross and Mary Turvey and Daisy Timm. They recorded six wins. ' Syd Lawson of Goderich and Ivan Gardner, Wingham, were second with two wins and a plus of 152, while Del Rumbold of London and Grant Wall, Cobourg, were_third with two wins and a plus of 146. Al Springel of London and Alex Boa, Goderich, were fourth with two wins and a plus of 126. In the double, 50 -point 'B' side of the tournament, Glen Casemore and Lorne Hamilton, both of Wingham, were first with six wins. They were followed by: Lorne Kuntz, Chepstow and Murray MacFarlane, Bluevale, two wins and a plus of 139; - third, Eugene Kuntz, Walkerton and Len Smith, Brampton, two wins and a plus of 129 and Fred Wickens, Kit- chener and Vince McInnes, Belmore, two wins and a plus of 127. Winners of the monthly draw were Tom Vance of Goderich, Elmer McFarlan, Bruce Foxton and Graham Adams, all of Wingham. Norm Elliott was the lucky winner of the 50-50 draw, The next tournament is April 2at 1 p.m. keysaves in net. In the Howick-Durham Howick boys knew Durham to avenge an earlier loss at their'n tournament. Reichard played well in net for Howick, Steve Papple had three goals -and one assist for Seaforth. GLEN'S GALLERY — The team had an exceptional tournament and the boys can be proud of the way they conducted themselves while playing up in the 'C' division.
