Stocking policy stalls derby Continued from 1B wide approach to fish management and for a number of years now, the end of trout stocking in the Maitland River at Wingham's Howson Dam was imminent. "Perhaps, we continued to stock at Wingham longer than it was justified," Mr. Malhiot said. Although the Wingham. Optimist Club, currently has its fishing derby plans on hold, it is possible the event could be staged later irk the fishing season with contestants trying for the many species of "pan fish" which are known to be quite plentiful in,the regular derby area. Rock bass, sunfish and bluegills are the natural fish species adapted to live in the conditions which exist in the' Maitland River in the area of Howson Dam, Mr. Malhiot said. There is also the chance of taking a northern pike or rainbow trout from the river in some areas near Wingham: he added. Although the MIN program does allow for the stocking of ponds from which the domestic fish are not able to get into the waterways and mix with natural populations, the ministry will not be stocking any ponds in this area. However, Mr. Malhiot said the Maitland Valley .Conservation Authority plans to stock some of the ponds in its jurisdiction.
