In his report, FCP President Vince Higgins commended the Elections Commissions committee for its treatment and respect for the newly formed party. During last Sep- tember's provincial election, the FCP fielded 36 candidates who drew over 48,000 votes. Leader Don Pennel of Burlington further encouraged those in at- tendance. He said that although society is in a moral decline, this may be necessary to awake people from apathy, and cited the Supreme Court decision on abortion as an example. Although members may get discouraged because of the issues which need to be faced, they should believe they can affect positive change, he added. One of the items of business discussed at the congress was Sunday shopping. The FCP believes a day of common pause is very important for quality of life, and will be supporting efforts to maintain it. Delegates also felt that ' govern- ment spending of tax dollars on new women's centres is a duplication of existing health services, which at the same time excluded men. The money would be much better spent on alternatives to abortion without hurting or offending anyone. Also in, regard to abortion, it was noted that men are being left out of the decision process over the rights of their chil- dren. In regard to the new fCderu! Christian Heritage Party, the FCP decided it does not fully endorse all of its policies, but encourages the new party in its efforts. A current priority of the FCP is establishing new riding associations in areas where they do not already exist. As the FCP plans to have candidates running in every riding in the next provincial election, existing riding associations are helping voters in anighboring areas to form associations of their own. The FCP is also further developing well thought-out policies on all issues, with all candidates having an underlying pro-life at- titude. salaries of young people hired for new summer jobs.
