(What's News Photo) Howick Bantams led to victory by team captain Captain Steve Gibson's five -point performance propelled the Lowick Bantams into the WOAA-OMHA championship round against Brussels. The Howick lads defeated a© hard-working, well -disciplined team from Elma-Logan Feb. 12 by a narrow 6-5 count. Gibson scored two goals and added two assists enroute to the win... Jaret Henhoeffer also put in a good performance as he recorded a hat trick to go.alo;..with an assist. .. R......_ Rob Van Den Broek got Howick off to a fast start as he converted passes from Chris Reichard and Gibson to beat Steve Soeder in the Elma- Logan net. Sean Smith tied the game for Elma-Logan, beating Mark Fraser on the power play. Three minutes later Henhoeffer scored a powerplay goal for Howick after taking a perfect pass from Gibson, The lead was short-lived, however, as 31 seconds later Smith scored his second goal for Elma- Logan to tie the game at 2-2. The score remained deadlocked after one period. Howick outscored its opponents three goals to one in the second frame to take a 5-3 lead into the third period. Gibson scored the first goal on the power play after receiving pass es Bantam D championship was held last Tuesday at the Howick Com- munity Centre with the Howick Bantams hosting Brussels. That team previously had defeated Ripley in two straight games to gain a berth in the finals. The game featured the return of Howick goaltender Peter Stewart to active duty after an absence of six weeks. Stewart returned in style, stopping every shot directed his way in leading_ Howick 'to _a 7-0 shirt-Oldshirt-Oldvictory. Stewart was very effective in the third period as the Howick squad played much of the period shorthanded. Reichard opened the scoring for Howick in the first period after receiving passes from Philip Liver- more and Henhoeffer. John Greig one -timed a pass in the slot from Livermore to increase the lead by two goals. A nifty shorthanded goal by Henhoeffer gave Howick a 3-0 lead after one period. Howick responded with three unanswered goals in the second frame, Van Den Broek took a goal - mouth pass from Livermore to score the fourth goal. King also drew an assist. Liveremore was hauled down on a venial"breakaway to force a venial" shot midway through the period. Livermore made no mistake as he scored to give Howick a 5-0 lead. Jason Jacobson scored the sixth goal ' on a low blast from the point with Reichard and Andrew Weber setting up the goal - The only goal of the third period came off the stick of Weber on along shot which was deflected off the Brussels defenceman. Van Den Broek drew an assist.. Honorable mention should go to the defensive"combinations of Jason Douglas, King, Jacobson, Gibson and Donald Livermore for killing off numerous penalties. - RON'S ROUND -11P ® The final series between Howick and Brussels for the WOAA championship is a ,best -of five affair. Future games are scheduled for. Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Brussels and this Sunday at Howick at . 7:30 p.m. (both if necessary). The coaching staff is extremely pleased with the effort of Van Den Broek, who is alternating the positions of centre, left wing and right wing each game. With just two minutes left in the game Gibson scored for Howick on the power play what proved to be the game winner. Henhoeffer assisted on the goal. However, Elma-Logan did not quit and Craig '.A ber°tson scored another powerplay goal with 58 seconds remaining in the game. Belmore club hosts bonspiel A Monte Carlo night this Saturday will kick off the week-long Gay Lea etter Butter Bonspiel at the Belmore Curling Club.
