Ironmen • playoff season
ended early by Goderich
The Wingham Ironmen made a
quick exit from the playoffs, losing
in the quarterfinals to the Goderich
Sailors. The Ironmen failed to win a
game in the Junior C best -of -five
series.
The Sailors, after winning the
opening game of the series 3-2 in
Wingham a week ago Sunday,
returned home last Tuesday and
recorded a 9-6 victory. The Ironmen
fell behind early and trailed 7-2 after
40 minutes, but launched a
comeback in the third and got to
within one before the Sailors
recovered with two more of their
vein .
The Ironmen returned home to
Lockridge Memorial Arena Friday
with their backs to the wall and
despite a strong effort, could not
stop a fired -up Sailors squad.
Goderich opened the scoring for
the third gamn a row and led 1-0
after 20 minutes. The Ironmen
dentieleted play :se the end, but
some strong goaltending by the
Sailors' Jeff Roy kept the score close
and the two clubs went to their
dreseing reertLe with a .14 tie, The
Sailors scored two unanswered goals
in, the third and hung on to win the
me 4-2 and the series 3-0.
The Sailors finished in last place in
the Grey -Bruce -Huron Junior C
League standings after a terrible
start which saw the team losing its
first 11 games, but the club im-
proved greatly in the second)if of
the DeSpite
04
Goderich was avoided by both the
Hanover and Port Elgin. teams
which got to choose their opposition
in the first round of playoffs.
Goderich now advances to the
semifinals against Port Elgin Bears
Who beat Walkerton in three games.
The Sailors -Bears matchup should
be interesting because the two clubs
have not forgotten a brawl which
occurred between the two teams late
in the season.
Ironmen Notes: Wingham rookie
Paul Brophy finished third in the
league scoring race with 33 goals
and 22 assists. The Ironmen had the
most players in the top 20 with seven
players one more than Hanover
