will celebrate her 90th birthday on March 2 with an open house for
'Wends and relatives. Great-granddaughter Jennifer Ryan, who turn-
ed two on Feb. 24, will help her great-grandmother celebrate the
special birthday. Jennifer is the daughter of David and Deb Ryan.
Margaret Sanderson
turns 90 on March 2
On March 2, 1898, Margaret (Ash)
Sanderson was born in a log house on
the third coneession of Wallace
Township.
Although she isn't as mobile as she
once was, Mrs. Sanderson manages
to keep abreast of events by reading
the newspapers daily.
She is the daughter of the late
George Henry and Mary Jane
(Barnett) Ash. She was raised in
Wallace Township and attended SS 2
Wallace.
One of the oldest of 11 children,
Mrs. Sanderson recalls doing as
much work on her family's farm as
in the farm house.
"I could harness a team of horses
• and take them to the field to work
until mealtime," she said.
At the age of 19, she married Roy
Sanderson. Her experience on her
father's farm was invaluable to Mrs.
Sanderson when her husband went
overseas in 1918 for more than a
year.
"He left me with 200 acres and 30
to 40 head of cattle to look after,"
Said Mrs. Sanderson. The couple
lived on a farm in Turnberry
Township.
Even though she will be 90 -years -
old in a few days, Mrs. Sanderson
claims she feels about 30 or 40, ex-
cept when she goes to walk, using a
walker.
Attributing her longevity in part to
hard work, Mrs. Sanderson said
throughout her life, she has hoed
gardens and potato fields, mowed
and loaded ,hay, and sheaves and
milked cows.
"My hands were blistered and as
hard as a board," she said.
Mrs. Sanderson has her own
opinions on smoking and drinking.
"I'm against smoklug, but people
can do what they want," she said.
She admitted as a young girl she
smoked ehn root until she got sick
and then was through with it.
Every evening before retiring,
Mrs. Sanderson has a small drink of
whiskey and water.
"It helps me to sleep," she said.
Once when her father varts very ill
and thought to be dying, he asked for
a drink and Mrs. Sanderson got his
bottle front a cu • rd. ,
The next day he was better and the
doctor coUldn't understand why,
Mrs. Sanderson said. She feels

the Sanderson had four sons and
three daughters. Two sons, George
in infancy, and Gordon have died.
Mr. Sanderson died in 1966.

United Church and was a member of

living with her daughter, Ruby. Ryan
