Frostyfest, Wingham's own winter
celebration, has become a tr: dition in the
town over the past seven years.
Started in 1981 as a way to beat the "winter
• blahs", Frostyfest has seen numerous
changes. But the basic concept of providing a
• wide range of activity for people of all ages
remains unchanged.
Away back in 1981, organizers scheduled
Frostyfest for the end of February.. Mild
weather that year forced cancellation of the
cross-country ski run, snowmobile drag races
and toboggan party, but other events proved
very popular,
The celebration got,, underway, at a variety'
concert at the town hall. Stephanie Gaunt; a
student at the Wingham Public School, was
chosen princess, while runners-up were
Jenny Bender and Joelle Reavie.
The Grant 'Coultes rink won the Frostyfest
curling bonspiel at the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club. Winners of a snooker tour-
nament at Family Fib, and Games were
Bevan Finley, Bill Brpphy, Dan Martin, Rick
McLennan, Bill Holland and Tom McLean,
Other Frostyfest events included a moc-
casin dance, casino night, sales at downtown
stores, wheelchair basketball game and a,
special film presentation.
Following a roast beef dinner at the
Wingham Legion Hall, there was a torchlight
parade and Christmas tree bonfire
