Women Who smOke during
pregnancy are subjecting ffieir
babies to known health riSks and
potential death.
About 25L. per' cent of women
continue to smoke during the
pregnancies. Studies in Canada
show that smoking results in an
incredible 6,000 Miscarriages each
year. About 500 babies die shortly
after birth, •again due to the car-
cinogens they were subjected to
during their crucialstages of
growth.
Maternal smoking increases the
risks of other• complications, such
as: premature delivery, stillbirths,
eye 'defects and sudden infant death
syndrome. Studies show there are
more than 2;000 chemicals in
cigarette smoke, the most damaging
of which are nicotine and carbon
monoxide.

year-end report
GORRIE-Chief Building Official
Wray Wilson presented his year-end
report to Lowick Township Connell
at recent meeting.
Atoong the highlights are a rise in
the number of building permits is-
sued and the quantity of lotting cer-
tificates dealt with by the CBO.
One hundred building permit
were issued in 1 7 as compared
72 in 1986. The value of work com
pleted was $2,176,997.00 last year, as
compared to $1,108,000.00 the 'yea
before.
The breakdown of the type of per
mits issued is as follows:
5.
te
- Nicotine constricts the blood
vessels of the placenta and reduces
r the supply of food and oxygen to the
unborn baby. As a result, the baby's
- normal development can be slowed
or altered. Carbon monoxide crosses
the placentainucIrmere easily Mail
oxygen and ends up reducing the
amount of oxygen reaching thefetus
by as much as 40 per cent.
Babies who survive this are born.
200 grams (one-half pound) lighter
on average than the babies of non-
smoking mothers. You may think
smaller babies are easier to deliver,
but the chances Of a smoker's baby
experiencing complications and
even death during the first few
weeks of life, are greater than those
of a non-smoker's baby.
