J want -a decorating scheme that will be easy to care for (we have three preteen children) and exciting for our short vaca- tions year-round. Our home is rather tradi- tional and we would like to experiment a bit with some- thing -different from what we are used to. We will be doing most of the work ourselves. Please give us some ideas for getting started. - R. N. A. Forza change you might like to decorate your vaca- tion home in a contemporary style. For starters, the most logical first step is to clean thoroughly and repair walls, then paint them. A light wall color will give you a pleasing base. If the floor needs attention, consider a cushiony vinyl that 3'i11 be comfortable to walk on but easy to sweep and damp mop. For furniture choose simple, straight lines for seating with upholstery in a tough fabric such as Naugahyde. Look for easy - care ,occasional tables with glass or faux marble tops to withstand calamities caused by inevitable spills. Windows can be treated simply with matchstick blinds or woven shades. Accessorize with your family's treasures related to your vacation home - pretty rocks, handsome sea shells, photographs and drawings that are fun to live with; if only for short, carefree periods. Q. 1 have a traditional home filled with pine repro- ductions. I have added new draperies in a small floral inspired by a fabric similar to what you see at Williams- burg. The provincial fabric has a cream linen back- ground with tiny cranberry and blue flowers. What colors should I use in upholstery fabric in my liv- ing room for a sofa and pair of wing chairs? I had thought of the cream background for the sofa bttt I believe I need more color because of the walls being cream and the floor a medium wood tone. Please give me some sug- gestions. - P. C. S. A. If your sofa is against a cream wall, a cream sofa fabric would blend the furni- ture into the wall. That's fine if you want to do that in a very small room. However, your wish to use more color suggests perhaps the blue microwave maGoc Le?ftover .turke y has man uses 2 y hard -roiled eggs chopped one-third cup chopped wal- nuts 1'2 cup mayonnaise tsp. curry puwuei 14 tsp. pepper 1 cup fine dry bread crumbs • 2 tbsps. melted butter or margarine Paprika Combine turkey, condens- ' ed soup, celery, onion, eggs, walnuts, .mayonnaise, curry powder and pepper in. a 2 quart glass casserole. By Desiree Vivea Your Christmas meal is over. The relatives have gone home, the kitchen looks like the aftermath of World War III, and you don't think you'll want to cook (or eat!) r, again for weeks. . Not to worry - it's a per- fectly normal reaction to the gastronomical extravaganza that is typical of the holiday. If you're fretting about what Co do with those gargantuan ' platters of leftover turkey, relax! With the help of your microwave oven, you'll find dozens of quick and easy ways to serve the succulent bird. If you didn't use the giblets for your meal, don't throw theril out. Instead, micro- wave them into a flavorful broth for soup or gravy. In a 2 -quart glass casser- ole, combine turkey giblets (neck, heart, liver and giz- . zard) with 3 cups water, 1 bay leaf and a dash each of salt and pepper. For more flavor, add a slice of onion and a few celery leaves. Microwave, covered on Roast '(70 per cent power) about 30 minutes. Remove bay leaf, onionand celery leaves. (Meat may be chop- ped fine and returned to the broth, if desired.) Leftover turkey tends to dry out when reheated in a conventional oven, but the. moist -cooking microwave keeps it tender and juicy. Perhaps the easiest way to serve leftover turkey is in a sandwich. For a quick, hot sandwich,, just place 3 or 4 thin slices of turkey on bread or bun. Cover with a few tablespoons of gravy. Micro- wave on High (100 per cent power) about 1 minute for 1 sandwich, 1 to 114 minutes for 2 sandwiches, and 2 to 3 minutes for 4 sandwiches. Leftover turkey is great in a tasty casserole dish. Try one of the following, or use in any recipe that calls for cooked chicken. BOOKREVI JOHN LOCKE. A Biography. By Maurice Cranston. Ox- ford University Press, To- ronto. 528 pp. Paper $14.95. I like white in a room because it gives such a clean, crisp look. But there are so many whites I get con- fused when 1 go to the paint store to select one. Now I want to redecorate my daughter's room and I think white walls .are what we want. How does one tell what white will do in a particular room and what type of white is best - creamy white, stark white, ,etc.? - W. C. T. A. There is indeed a wide selection of whites. If you want a warm and cozy feeling in your white room, choose a white with yellow in it. That softer ,any starkness and is good if you don't have much natural light in. groom. If you have a very sunny room, you can cool the room down with a white that has a touch off blue in it. A grayed white can pro- vide a neutral background, especially nice with leather and heavily textured fabrics ( but probably not as pleasing for a child's room' as the other shades). SOFE AND FEMININE -Two fabrics, one an open pussy -willow motif on the walls, bed and outside of the draperies and one a stripe with an airbrushed effect on the canopy and underside of the draperies, establish the color scheme and design quality for this bedroom.
