It's more of an idea than a place. Basically, it's a religious, community located on the edge of the tiny village -of Combermere in Northeastern Ontario. But it has some unusual features. For example, it was -started 30 odd years ago o by an unusual couple -- a Russian baroness and a New York Times crime reporter! Today, there are 20 other Madonna Houses scattered around the continent from the Yukon to South Ameri- . can, and they all stemmed from the mother house at Coinbermere. A handful 'of ' Catholic priests and 125 laymen and . women make up the com- munity. They work together, pray together, and live in celibacy in the spirit of Christian love. They're join- edby about 1,500 people a year 'seeking spiritual strength in a peaceful re- treat. I spent a day there just looking around and talking to people. t roamed around the main building, visited •a 'couple of the small cabins or prayer huts, saw the beauti- ful log church with its golden dome that could have been transported from Russia. Some may call it a "peace- ful retreat". There's an aura of tranquility, all right. But my over-all impression was that the residents also work like beavers. There were people moving around quick- ly in the kitchen, others com- ing and going in the laundry room, others covering plants with leaves. A few Miles away is the community's own farm. It's another hive of activity. I watched a cheese maker at work, and a man and woman Making wine from crab'ap- ples. A man with a team of. heavy horses was spreading manure on a nearby field. All of them filling the needs of the residents and visitors. • Mind you, it's ,not all work and no prayer. There were meetings and discussions. And there were a few people reading in the library which is well' stocked with Russian authors such as Tolstoy, along with„ -the works of the baroness. • For part of the day my guide was Father Robert. Pelton. He described the be- liefs of the community as be- ing similar to Eastern Catholicism with emphasis on the spirit of love as out:- lined ut=lined in the writings of the baroness. He also told me how Baroness Catherine 'de,. Heuck Doherty came to Combermere in 1947 to open a mission. After her .hus- band's • death she had . left Europe and gone to work with the poor in the slums of Chicago and New York. While in New York she met and later married New York crime reporter Eddie Do- herty. He came with her to Canada and helped open the first Madonna House. He also became a priest and de- voted himself to religious writing. After . he took his vows, he and Catherine lived a celibate life. Father Doherty's writings, like those of Catherine, stressed the power of love — simple love., • I had taken quite a few notes, and sat down in a quiet corner to look them over, - and try to piece them to- • • gether. A Russian baroness devot- ing her life to the poor, and the poor in spirit, teaming up with a newspaperm'an who turned from writing"4'about gangsters to religious writ- ing, with the two of them ul- timately bringing spiritual strength and hope to thou- sands.
